I have this incredibly irritating squeaking noise when the car drives.

FINALLY, after using the ChassisEar gadget, traced the noise to a brake cable rubbing onto the body when the car moves.
The problem is that the cable does that in a place where I can't get to it and can't figure out any simple way to get to it without taking the whole car to bits.

It's in the middle of the crossmember of the chassis and the body at the front where the centre console is.

Anyone have any idea of how to get to it?
The only way that I can see is to take off the dash, etc and go from the top, from the cabin.
Under the dash is not helpful, as neither is from underneath the car or from the front compartment.
Any help appreciated.

Not sure how the S4 looks when the ceter consol has been removed, but in my 88' it would offer you no access at all. In fact, my center is held in place with quik release tabs as I had an alarm module there until recently. As with the Ferrari 308/328 cars, access to that center tunnel is a pain!

If you put the car up on stands, could you move the break line at all from the rear - where the cooing hoses run to/from the front?

Good luck,
Drive topless!!!

I'm assuming you are talking about the center tunnel of the chassis. If you pull the center console there is an access hole that the shifter sits in and you may be able to reach your problem area from there. You will probably have to remove the shifter assembly to have enough room. I know you can reach towards the rear of the car from there, not sure how far forward you can reach.

Hope this helps.

If you can get some access to part of it somehow, as through the shifter hole, etc., you might try taking a piece of rubber hose of suitable diameter, spliting it lengthwise and slipping it over the brake line and push it through to where it is rubbing. I would want to fix that, as two pieces of metal rubbing will wear eventually, resulting in a hole in one or the other. A hole in the brake line would be a bad thing.

If the problem is just the noise why try a spray with
kind of a rust prevention like DINITROL from shifter hole ?

I'm a bit puzzled by your description of the location of the squeak, mainly because you mention a (hand?) brake cable passing through the centre tunnel.
I'm fairly certain that it's just the gear cables that pop out of the centre tunnel, which will be a much easier fix as you should be able to access enough of the cable from the gear lever area to move them around to a different (non squeaky) position.
Or do you mean brake pipe?
