I understand you have to plug one end of the cable to a laptop with the program but what part of the car does the other end of the cable plug into, do you have to plug it to the ecu or some were under the dash. can anyone help thank you again.

Look under the passenger side dash, you should find a black connector to plug into. And don't forget to have the engine running else it won't work.

There is also a plug in the engine bay solenoid box with a repeater lamp for the check light next to it.

BTW, There is a way of finding the fault code WITHOUT freescan or a laptop! If you are armed with the code then people on here can help you way more and it may single out a single component.

This alternative way involves linking out two of the ports in the cars plug, then the check light flashes the fault code numbers for each digit.
It is a factory listed method and easy to understand, but i'd rather someone who has actually done it tell you how, as i (having the laptop) have never had reason to

Just posted this on another topic, to the left of the secondary injector resistor (arrowed), you can see a green lamp (this is the check light repeater lamp), and to the left of that you can see the cars second diagnostic plug dangling there.

to comment on all as a recent user of freescan. On my 95 s4, the plug everyone talks about under the passenger dash is easy to get to, but its plugged into a "dock" that may make it difficult to find if you're looking for a loose plug. Thought I might add my .02, as I was saying "crap" two days agao when I couldn't find this "plug" everyone was talking about (I even had to remove the dash when changing the wiper motor and didn't notice it....) stupid of me i guess, wasn't looking at the time.

Good Luck, my freescan fun has turned into a nightmare.
