I have a 1995 Esprit S4S with the orginal leather shift knob. I am trying to remove it and replace it with a new metal shift knob. I am having a hard time removing the old knob. Does anyone know how I should do this without breaking the shift rod? Thanks.

Gotta remove the whole thing and replace it, shift knob and actual stick, check this site out:

www.espritfactfile.com

I believe that there is a short blurb about it on there.

Thank you all for your input. What type of glue should I use to glue on the new metal knob? Epoxy?

Check out Tony Grasso's site for some good info on changing gear knob:

I have seen metal knobs with set screws and in the past have seen them on Ebay. If glued I think it is an Epoxy of some sort. Lew has managed yank off a knob or two intact.

I finally got the shift knob off. Underneath the leather and rubber is a odd shape metal piece that is just wedged really tight with the shifting rod. It's not glued in there like what some of you thought. It's just hammered in there tight. The only way to take it out is straight up following the grooves. Don't turn and twist it, or you may end up bending the rod. I could not make mine to budge. I was tapping it lightly with a hammer with not results. I finally took a roto zip and cut a line down on the metal piece until it reached the shift rod. I then pryed it open slightly with a screw driver, and then pulled it straight out. It was really hard work. I put the new steel knob back the same way. Tapping it lightly with a rubber mallet util it sits all the way down. No glue. Thank you all for all your help.

My S4S looks like it has a different set up as Tony's.
