how to diagnose v8 problems
Discussion
Hi Ian,
Best method to monitor fault codes and all sensor data is using a Lotus-Tech1-scanner (with V8-cardridge plugged in) or any other compatible OBD2-scanner. If you like you may have a look:

The Check-Engine-Light always comes on when a sensor reading is out of spec. There are many sensors on your V8-engine that can cause this: Coolant-Temp-sensor, MAT-sensor, MAP-sensor, BARO-sensor, 4x O2-sensors, TPS-sensor, Vehicle-Speed-sensor, Rough-Road-sensor, Fuel-control-sensor, crankshaft-sensor, cam-sensor, knock-sensor, air-injection-system, EGR-system, ...
Cheers

As Marcus pointed out, lotsa possible causes and the only sure way to find out is to use a scan tool. I have found that the V8 is very picky on gasoline brands of all things. I use nothing but Chevron Supreme now and never have any problems. It turns out that some additives can cause a check engine light. Shell gas for example ALWAYS give me (and others) a check engine light code P1701 - system too lean bank 1 (from memory).

Hi KM,
Thats quite interesting ... Here in Europe Shell gas is quite fine for Esprits, they even have a Super-Premium called "Ultimate" with 100 ROZ.

Hi Marcus,
Yes, I don't doubt that. In most cases, gasoline is gasoline but depending on many variables additives are used which seem to have an effect on the V8 ECM. One of the regional Mercedes-Benz techs in the US told me years ago that they recommend Chevron for their cars as Chevron adds techron to their gasoline products which help to keep the injectors clean. I've continued this for my cars for years now and have yet to have any problems.
