I have a MY2000 V8

There's what sounds like a rattly heat shield someplace, it rattles at about 2000 rpm and when the engine's labouring.

I've climbed under the car and I cant find anything anywhere that looks like it could be the cause.

Does anyone have any suggestions where I should be looking?

Colin,

I went through that too.

Could be the EBPV as Mark mentioned. I thought that's what mine was but after removing it I still had the rattle. If the noise has a kind of tinny buzzing (high tech description) quality to it it's probably a heat shield.

There is a conglomeration of heat shields around the left hand side motor mount that protects the motor mount and the pivot arm bushing. There are several 10mm nuts/bolts that hold the assembly together. Check to see if any are missing or loose or if any of the shields are close enough to anything or each other to rattle under vibration. They are not easy to get to and it helps a lot if the car is on a lift.

That could be the source of your noise as it was on mine.

Jim

Hi Fanx,
Rattling noises on the V8 are very likely to come from loose or cracked exhaust-manifold-shields and/or loose/cracked cats and/or loose/cracked exhaust-pipes.

BTW, the V8 does not have an EBPV !

That's the one

I have been under the car a looked at the exhausts, they look fine, though the cat wasn't properly clamped to the turbo on one side. I've tightend this, but it made no difference.

It defo sounds like a rattly heat shield, but I woz begining to think that it doesn't have any given that I couldn't find them.

At the weekend I'll get up and have a good look (feel) round the engine mount.

Cheers guys.

Check the welds on the muffler really, really close. When my welds went, the exhaust pipe would "jump back in place" when I turned the engine off and I had to get really close to see the crack...

They are quite well hidden !!! Take a bright torch and look from underneath ... I´m sure you will find them ... The only downside is that its almost impossible to fix the rattling because of too limited acess. Been there tried it ...
