Hello all,
Well, I will be having some work done while my S4 is being stored and I would like some advice on the below parts.

First an upgraded turbo. I don't neccesarily want a lot more boost but I want a more efficient turbo that wont heat the intake air so much and can produce a more sustained boost than the original. I understand most places want the old one as a core, but I remember when I checked with one particular shop, there was a several month waiting period. I dont really care about ceramic ball bearings. Any suggestions anyone?

Next an upgraded transmission. Does anyone have any experience with PUK's upgraded transmission? Specifically I am ineterested in the one piece shaft and stronger first and second gear. Are these available seperatly? I wouldnt mind buying the whole transmission already built with upgraded parts, but having it shipped to the states, then having the old one sent as a core would just be a crazy shipping charge. Any suggestions anyone?

How about new brake rotors? I dont want to do anything radical, but I may need one new rotor anyway, so I am thinking of changing them all out to cross drilled. Anyone know where these can be purchased?

Thanks, John

John,

I would have to go with the WC unit as far as the turbo upgrade, I just put one on my S4 and it is just what you are looking for. Very low charge temps, straight bolt-on install, not modifications needed. This thing takes a full minute to spool down after shutting off the car! Amazing!

As far as the transmission, why do you feel the need to dump that kind of money into it if you don't plan on going crazy with the boost and HP. If you have syncro issues fine, have the syncros replaced and upgrade the clutch to a PUK +%35 while your at it. Then drive it like a sane person. Your talking about dumping upwards of 10k into your gearbox! Maddness!

Cross drilled front rotors can be sourced from companys like Power Stop and the like since you have TMC brakes, there the same as the old Celica's.
The rear on the other hand is another story, the only place I've ever seen a cross drilled replacement is on www.ramspott-brandt.de/ for the princely sum of 549 EURO!

Cheers,

Mike Reed

John,

The WC unit seems excellent but very expensive. If price is no issue what so ever I'd go for it. If you want to shop around a bit I'd call:

Turbonetics or TEC or MJM Turbo or Majestic Turbo, tell them what you're after, and see what they say. You may save $1K. It's what I plan on doing.

I had a gearbox service recently -- the first since getting the car in April -- which included a new seal, new fluid, and a PUK 25% clutch and the difference is unreal. No synch issues, no slippage, it's great. I'm shooting for 300WHP (at 264 now) and don't expect to want or need the up-rated shafts. I think our goals are in line so I'd pour that 6-10K into something else.

Call PNM engineering about brakes. They have some inexpensive options including a cross-drilled mammoth Brembo rear conversion for not much money you may be interested in.

Luke.

Thanks for all the info guys.
Mike, Did you notice a performance increase with that turbo? What chip are you running? I spoke to WC before and was inpressed with them. However, I believe there was a long wait time. How long did it take to get yours? Did you have to send your core turbo in before or after you received the new unit?
As far as the brakes go, it looks like PNM is probably my best bet. I see there is another post going on about a recent conversion, but on an 89. I will email them and see what they can offer.
I know the upgrades on the gearbox are expensive, but I find it hard to have it pulled apart and not do some upgrades. I guess I will just wait to see what kind of condition everything is in inside once it is pulled apart.

I'll second the note on WC Engineering's turbo. Not inexpensive, but well done.

John,
I'm running the #6 Red Race Code with the WC turbo, there definetly is a performance increase with the turbo. You have the ability to sustain 1.2 bar almost indefinetly with the efficiency of the turbo. It also feels as though mid range power has been enhanced.
Spool time is the same if not faster.

There was no wait when I contacted WC last month, they have been trying to collect a few spare cores so that they have a few units on hand. I sent my core back the day after I recieved the new turbo. The compressor inlet on the new turbo has been machined out by a few mm and a larger compressor trim installed. You can really apprieciate the difference when you have them side by side.

Before you pull the trigger on a brake upgrade from PNM contact me off list, I have developed a 6-pot kit with Willwood parts that will save you a lot of money over any PNM kit. E-mail me if you want details.

I just emailed you Mike. By the way, what is the part number of the turbo you ordered? If I remember correctly they have several different ones depending on what specs you want.
