I'm going to be replacing the timing belt on my car in the next few days, as soon as I can clear all the stuff around it away.

I've heard warnings not to turn the engine "backwards" (counterclockwise). Exactly what will happen if the engine is turned backwards?

Also, the instructions I am going by tell me to remove the crank pulley. How necessary is this? I have been unable to get a good look at the way the front of the engine is layed out, so I'm still not exactly sure what my plan of attack should be.

thanks,
dan

Disclaimer: I haven't done a timing belt yet.

The thing about not turning the motor backwards is aimed at cars with mechanical chargecooler pumps. It instantly destroys the pump.

The pulley is going to have to come off.

After replacing the timing belt tensioner and idler pulleys/bearings on my step-son's 96 Eagle Talon over the Christmas holidays (both bearings blew up 5 miles from our house after a 500 mile trip), I would add to be sure to replace the timing belt tensioner bearing while you are there. I think you can get a cross for it at the local bearing supply store.

i'm glad I read this thread. I'm 5k away from needing my belt replaced, but I fugre what the hell, let's do it now..

Anyone happen to know where I can locally get the timing and all accessory belts for a 95 S4? I don't mind spending the $80ish from JAE, but I'd like to be able to get them at a local parts store to do it before the end of the week (b/f I have to start relying on the car)...

Thx, and good luck with your job too. It looks to be a fun job IMO...

Alternator belt
Gates
7340
3/8"x34-5/8"

Timing Belt
Gates
T188
Fits 1991 Peugeot 405 1.9L DOHC (on my car now)

I have a cross listed for the water/vacuum pump, but you don't have a mechanical vacuum pump, so I don't know if that will be the same or not.

I got me a timing belt (a B belt from JAE), I'll have to order a tensioner bearing now that I know I should do that...

rrjuge, this has definitely been a fun job everything on the esprit seems to have been engineered to make it 10 times harder than working on my 55 Chevy. Even draining the radiator... working for 20 minutes trying to undo the plug, then reallizing that the only place the coolant can go is cascading off the underbody sheilding, all over the floor, very far from the pan I'd arranged.

rant over. I'm getting the feeling that if the devil came to earth as a lump of fiberglass and self tapping screws, he would be a Lotus Esprit
