Well... this is kind of stupid, but I've had no luck for the better part of 2 hours so...

Anyone know a better way to get the lower coolant hose off of the water pump? By better, I mean better than wedging my arm between the bulkhead and cam sprockets, and pulling to no avail. This thing just won't come off... (yes, the clamp is off). I've managed to get the thermostat end hose off, and the heater hose, but the lower coolant hose eludes me.

thanks for any help,
dan

In general, there are two ways to get stuck coolant hoses off:

Method 1: Take channel lock type pliers, grasp (gently if aluminum is involved) the hose and twist (rotate) the hose. This breaks the seal on it and then it will come right off. Hose is reuseable.

Method 2: Sharp knife. Cut through the hose lengthwise. Be careful if aluminum is involved. Hose is not reuseable.

Even easier; SLip a thin screwdriver or metal point between the hose and the pump housing, then spray a little WD-40 between them. Work it around a little, the hose should pop off pretty easily.

I also remove the vacuum pump when removing the waterpump, if you haven't already.

thanks! I'll monkey around a bit more... There's not much room back there at all. I'm not trying to get the water pump off, but I do need all those hoses out of the way

I too had mega problems getting that hose off. Other than removing the exhaust cam sprocket (to gain more clearance) I figured there was no was in heck this hose was coming off. A day or two later I tried the hot soapy water and the small (dulled blade) screwdriver trick . . . but found that the blade could not be inserted all 360 degrees around the hose. The area is too cramped. I could access only ~80 degrees and, although it lossened the hose some, I still could not grip enough of it at once and gain needed leaverage to pry the thing off. The water pump nipple is really coarsely (sand?) cast and grips that hose really well.

In the end I cut the thing off and ordered a new one from JAE.

well, it came off!

Actually... I managed to accidentally kick away the stool I was using to get over into the engine compartment, and grabbed the hose to prevent falling too far. Rather than preventing my falling, the hose came off.

So that's one way to do it To tell you the truth, working on this car has really been beating the sh!t out of me. I'm betting on it being worth it though
