I would say either (1)Keep the cats and go for straight pipes or (2)Get the hyperflo cats and go for straight pipes...

...Then - if that is not loud enough for you, you can always ditch the cats and have 02 sensor fun after that...

Hi Adam,
Removing the cats is NOT a bad idea !!!!
This will give you a very noticable performance gain
The only problem is that your Check-Engine-Light will come on because the ECU is noticing that the cats are missing via post cat O2-sensors.
With the Red ECU (Chip #3) this will not happen, because the Red Race Code ignores the post cat O2-sensor readings (it just makes a check when you start the engine if they are present ...

My cat pipe has just gone on my GT3, so my Lotus mechanic has got all the insides out to make a straight through pipe. (I was going to buy a by-pass pipe anyway, getting the MOT done is achievable)

Apparently the performance has a very noticable improvement. Not only that, the after market exhausts now have the odd flame spitting out the rear!

My only worry is that the car is now louder than it already was. (Loud!) So the neighbours are going to love me. Ah...who cares! Lucky for them I live and work abroad at the moment.

I just hope there are dry roads when I come home this time.

flames out the back isn't all that. average people confuse it with high performance, because of afterburners on jets. internal combustion engines have no turbines and benefit not from jet physics. there are numerous reasons why your exhaust might ignite. usually this is an indication all your fuel isn't being utilised by the engine, and your mileage will suffer. best regards.

I like the flames for amusement factor, I didn't say that they would give an increase in performance. Removing the cat has. Nor is there a problem, have you never seen flames come out of racing car exhausts? (I have a race system on the car along with other mods.)

My mechanic was a Factory Lotus mechanic for 15 years and now has his own business, so I would assume, in fact I know he is shit hot and knows what he's doing.

Regards

i'd like to remove my catalytic converter too, but i live in a environ-mentally-retarded community. i had no end of trouble getting it to pass emissions testing. if i removed it, i'd have to put it back on every other year for testing. i can make it bolt on, but as my car is pre computer control, i was able to simply disable the oxygen pump. if i keep my mouth shut about it, the vegan tree huggers won't rat me out.

Environmental types in the states??? You're having a larf old chap. You guys drive around in the biggest gas guzzlers going and pay nothing for fuel. Aren't the States the biggest (Or one of them) contributors to the lessening of the Ozone?

I wouldn't worry about your exhaust output. Get that cat off, put a straight through exhaust on and put a chip in! Have some fun!
