i took the '84esprit out for a drive when suddenly, the engine began stumbling after any major throttle action on my part. i guessed the cable was sticking, and as it was a rainy night, i decided to try and limp her home. well i radiply changed my mind as the car stalled at every intersection. in pouring rain, and only a small LED light to see by, i looked for the problem, as pints of water drained into the engine compartment. i hurriedly draped the car cover over the boot lid. by now completely wet, i trace the problem to a missing throttle cable housing retainer screw. i hadn't a suitable substitute, so i tried to jam the housing into the receptacle with vinyl adhesive tape. that didn't hold, so i had to stretch the housing clear of obstruction by using a lot of the same tape wrapped around the cable itself. that got me home, although the adhesive made the throttle action gummy, and i had to play with the pedal to unstick it at times. once home, i toweled off all the wet leather and carpet, and assessed the situation. in my haste, i kinked the throttle cable enough to kink one of the outside wrapped wires. i of course also need to replace the retainer screw that fell off. if anyone knows the correct type of screw and throttle cable to use, i'd appreciate the info. i recently treated myself to a professional lotus certified carb tune at (viking motor sports), and the mechanics should have noticed the loose screw. they came highly recommended, which convinces me i need to do all my own maintainence. thanks for letting me vent after the ordeal.

Hi cant help with part numbers you require, but i can sympathise with the lack of 'attention to detail' that you have suffered by some half wit mechanic that didn't do his job properly for which he was paid to do.Some times the only way to deal with things like this is to actually stand over them and make sure they do the job correctly,by the way he didn't touch your brakes did he ??! Perhaps it may be worth going back to the mechanic and see if he will help with some of the cost?
Best of luck

thanks nick. i probably should go back, and i know it's gonna upset me when they won't admit to anything. it isn't a lack of ethics. it's more the letigious culture we live in where businesses are afraid to be truthful, because a few customers will take advantage of the situation for unfair gain. hence i won't bother going back(ever). i must give them credit though for an excellent tuning. i could not have managed as well, knowing not what the 910 engine was supposed to sound like.
a new throttle cable should be inexpensive, but being a lotus novice, it'll take me a day to string it through. yes they did inspect my brakes, which is a little scary. it's more scary that i'm planning to replace my own brake rotors, with little more experience than changing brake pads on gerry cars with easier access. wish me luck.

I get sloppy sometimes with my typing... depending on the time I have available.
As a service to all Lotus owners and upholding the last of English grammar, may I suggest we all learn a few things.
1) Good vs Well ... one is an adjective the other an adverb... Good car, good job, good drive.... i fell well, she runs well, it is going well.

2) Me vs I... just learn the basics. When you are talking of "we" use I .. "My friend and I went to blaa blaa blaa" . When you are talking of "us" use me.
" Blaaa blaa blaa went with my freind and me.

3) There is not an s on anyway.. anyways is not an english work.

4)Add the "ly" on the end of adverbs.. "she drove quickLY "

If you get these things right most of the time you will feel like a scholar and sound like one too. If you step out of your lotus and make all 4 mistakes you will sound like a bozo..

LOL i love totally off topic stuff... hehehehe

FWIW - I've pretty well tried all the Lotus shops in the So Cal area and Viking is by far the best and the only shop I ever take my S4s to. Why don't you contact them and explain the issue you're having, I've always found them to be very upfront and honest (and I have no affiliation with viking other than they work on my car!).

Cheers!

good to see some humour when we northerners have our cars stored and nothing to do but do skids in snow covered parking lots with the winter beaters.....
