The fuel tank that is, on a v8?

I don't know whether I've got the world's craziest fuel guage or whether they're all like this, but a full tank will read 3/4 full, after about 40 miles we'll be down to half full, at about 120 miles she's reading the big fat zero.

Now, I'm sure I've read somewhere that these things hold 70 or 80 litres, so I've been getting braver.

Today I 'chickened out' at about 210 miles, it was so low the fuel guage didn't even move when the car was turned on, and I managed to get 55 litres in there.

So, how much more does it hold?

don't let the tank get that empty if avoidable. all sorts of gunk and sediment resides at the bottom of the tank. that last bit of fuel can prematurely clog up your fuel filter. yeah they're cheap, but so am i. if you keep the tank filled, those particles get stirred up, and they don't exit all at once. that said, i've gone 375 miles in my S3 turbo on a dare. i probably could have broken 400 if pressed.

Never managed to get mine to show a full tank(s) on the guage, even with petrol spilling out over the paint at the forecourt! It would show about a needle width less than max.
Then about 50 miles later it would head rapidily for half a tank indicated and finally sit for miles at around a third full.

You're not the only one!

HI ALL,
When i refurbished my passenger side tank on my s4 i had to take the fuel "sensor" out. What detects the level of fuel is just a bit of falt plastic type material that just "floats" ontop of the fuel level using a lever and probably a rheostat - hence the odd fuel reading under any condition other than stationary or constant speed.

I recall that it is also not a good idea to fill the tanks to the top. Something about if your tanks are full and you corner hard, as in track-day, the fuel gets pushed to the evap canister which overfills, spills out and foooff, burnt Esprit.

You are once again correct.

It is a common rookie mistake. More than one person has topped off his tank thinking this will lessen a chance of an explosion during a crash by having less vaporized gas in the air space in his fuel tank.

It is true that during hard cornering that fuel can migrate up right filler and the raw fuel will saturate the charcoal canister. A few Esprit's have caught on fire this way and have been sold on ebay.

it takes a lot of patience to get the esprit tanks to full capacity. one has to keep waiting for the tank to level off. "full" for the average driver is probably just right. i wish the automatic clasps at the filling stations had a lower setting. i hate having to handhold the pump and breath fumes.

The worst part about it all in my opinion, besides never knowing how much more you can put in before it overflows and covers the paint (something I would roll up and die over if it ever happened to me, yet I press my luck) is the ability to measure MPG! With out being able to accurately fill two tanks of gas to the same point how does one tell how much fuel they are burning per mile ..besides the empty wallet??

I think I average 15-16 gallons per fill up. I am sure that isn't completely full, but as mentioned, the side effect of doing so can be horrific. besides, that extra .19 gallons you squeeze in there won't get you THAT much further.

Luke, you don't want to know MPG... especially if you got a heavy foot. I have gotten as much as 19MPG and as little as 13MPG. it is all driver's style. But if you really want to know, set the miles to 0 and see how far you get. Of course it won't be exact since the Esprit gauge and fueling is totally off, but it won't be off my more than a gallon a mile.

To fill, I find it much, MUCH easier to get a good and constant fill from the passenger side. I tried the driver's side a few times and it always clicked off every 5 seconds. Passenger side never does.

You're obviously not trying hard enough! I've gotten just below 8mpg on a track day, and once hit 29mpg on the trip home...

Cheater! I have yet to do a track day! Nor have I done straight highway for an entire 2 tanks!

Cooo. 73 litres. I'm lucky if my Sport 350 takes more than high 40's / 50 or so and that's when the gauge is down at the point where I don't fancy driving too far (but without the low fuel light having lit).

I tend to record the mileage, litres and cost in a nice little Excel sheet each time I fill up which for the first year I had the car (2003) gave me the following data:

18/4/03 - 5/3/04 (322 days)
20518miles - 32943miles (12425) (I've done a lot less last year ~3k)
Fuel cost: £2642
Miles/day: 38
Cost/day £8.20

£/mile: £0.21
miles/£: 4.7

Anyone else with a Sport350 regularly get more than say 50-60 litres in or is it just that you need to spend ages waiting for the fuel to move about in order to get that much in at one attempt?

Regards

Andy - i did a similar thing when i was using the esprit for commuting (i stopped after about 3 months as i decided it was a bit sad.. lol).

Most i would get in is about 65 litres. Usual fill-up was around 55 litres. Didn't do the £/mile but i did measure mpg - average over 5k miles was 22mpg.

BTW - were you on the A34 this morning? I saw a silver 350 going north nr oxford - thought it might be you?

cheers
Rob
