Okay... How to Freescan... what do I need?
Discussion
Forgive me guys, I'm going nuts.. I've nearly finished my Esprit... (stage 1...) and I'm runnin outta stuff. My Dell Inspiron is just begging to be give a run again (ever since I sold my "Vin Diesel-esque single turbo RX-7 she's been lonely..)
Anone have a list of exactly what I need? I understand that Andy Whittaker is the god of providing freeware, but what hardware (cables..) do I need to get his software running with XP sp2?
Thanks again, and keep up for my new updates to my FYI website (I really, really needed what I'm about to publish when I was installing my alarm. I now hate fuses, , my test light, my voltage meter, and my quick crimper.)

One stop shopping at Lotus Esprit World:

Andy has the interface hardware on his site as well, or atleast he has in the past.

Hi Rob,
for going Freescan you will need a Laptop or PC with a serial RS232 port and the Freescan software AND a proper interface cable that will link your cars ECU to your PC-serial-port.
If you like, you may have a look:

You will get everything you need: Interface-cable and software.
Cheers

Sounds familiar! Try CompUSA or any of the big consumer electronics retailers (Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.) and buy a USB to serial port adapter.
I've heard of some people having problems with them saying that they only support standard baud rates like 4800, 9600, etc. but the ECUs in our cars require 8192 baud. Some serial ports have a wide enough tolerance that setting them for 9600 will work, but it's not a rock solid connection. My Sony laptop will work for 5-10 minutes from a cold engine, but loses it after that. It looks like the ECU's baud rate drifts enough after it warms up that the laptop can no longer reliably communicate with it.
I started a project late last year to make a board that will handle the speed translation between a laptop and the ECU, but it's on the back burner at the moment. I've also considering going to USB as well, but I likely won't get back to it until March.
Anyway, it may be worth a shot to buy one of the adapters unless someone else has a better solution.
good luck,
Bill

well, i just ordered mine from LEW. God I hope it comes quickly. I think I'm getting wastegate boost only. I KNOW that the ecu will cut out at 1.3 bar. My chip (red race) cuts out at 1.25 bar, right?
If I've got that safety net, I may try to put an MBC (bleeder valve) on it tomorrow to see if my hypothesis that the ecu-controlled boost controller is out....

As i'm not understanding computers that much, i have got an old IBM thinkpad (same as Dermot uses i think), and use that for freescan.
They gotta be cheap on e-bay, they have the right port, and you ain't driving about with your best laptop in the car (or getting it greasy in the garage).
Plug in and go!, worked for me and very handy as i would not know what to ask for at the PC store to get it to work on a new laptop
The LEW lead is far better quality than the Whittiker (albeit cheaper) lead.
