Removing driveshafts on 1990 SE
Discussion
Special tool is along skinny punch. Yu should hit it sharply instead of using small taps. I usually use several different diameter punches. First I drive out the inner pin, then the outer.
Do not drill it out.

Does anyone have any tips on removing the pin that holds the driveshaft to the trans. The book calls for a special tool, so naturally I made my own. Its basically an extended punch. I've been banging away at it and it hasn't budged. I'm tempted to drill it out.
Thanks...
Pete

Travis has an excellent gallery on halfshaft and seal replacement. It should provide you valuable insight.
From my own personal travels; there are in fact two roll pins inserted into the half shafts. First use a smaller punch to push the inner pin out and then use a larger stepped punch to drive out the larger 4mm pin. I would not under any circumstances attempt drilling things out as that would most likely mean replacement of pinion side gears or the half shafts. They do pound out fairly easily using a smallish ball peen type hammer. No large sledge needed for the job at all. The fun part is installing new axle seals. I found out the hard way that making a proper seal driver saves you largely with respect to a drool proof install.
Happy New Year,
Steve

Pete,
Has the pin moved at all since you've been whacking it? Mine are so tight that I can't get them out without a heavy hammer, the right size drifts with a flat end and solid direct hits.
Try getting the smaller center pin out first as was suggested and see if that helps .
Drilling is an iffy thing as you can easily break off the drill bit in the hole and then you have an even harder piece of metal to get out.
It is possible to bend the pins inside the shaft although that is more likely to happen when you re-insert them. If they are bent, there is a lot of frustration ahead for you, I've been there.
Also, not sure if the earlier cars are this way but on my 95 the holes in the shafts only line up one way and can be 180 degrees off but they are still close. It's not a bad idea to mark the driveshaft and output shaft for later reference when you take it apart.
Feel free to contact me off list if I can be of any help.
Jim
