Thursday traded a 308 for this fine car. It is missing a relay (Left rear of relay panel) plus is having lighting, ac, coolant level sensor, ABS, SIR issues.
The ABS pump activates any time the pedal is depressed, and after a few depressions the light comes on.
The AC pump engages but no cold air.
The wiper motor begins to move but stops with very small movement.
The coolant level sensor lights intermittently, it has the dual metal overflow tank system.
The parking light switch had issues but I was able to disassemble it and carefully clean it- but still the right park lights and dash lights don't illuminate.
The single airbag is blown and I am seeking a reasonably priced replacement, or new MOMO wheel.
The speedometer reads ~30MPH always, and the ODO doesn't work.
When left turn signal is on, the exterior lights work but the dash indicator blinks once and goes out- the right side works properly.
Need a new windshield, window washer bottle, spare, jack, toolkit.
Thank you
Erik

Are we to assume this car has been crashed and repaired?

This is my understanding and very professionally done if this is the case. The only damage I can see is the front bumper housing was stitched, so I am thinking it was a minor bump on the front. The DPO pried the wiper arm using the glass and cracked it from there.
Cheers

We share some of the same components but a few are different. My books are for years 88-92 so even if many items are the same I don't think it's a good idea for you to be looking at the previous years manuals.
The ABS pump activates any time the pedal is depressed, and after a few depressions the light comes on.

Check the brake lines for crimps, leaks, and bleed system. Check for stuck calipers. Check wheel sensors for defects.

The AC pump engages but no cold air.

Is the dash vents not getting cold air or are you getting air flow in foot wells with the fan on? If so toggle to dash vents. Use large right rotary knob to close heater flaps. Set left to cool. set A/C temp thermostat to cold. Keep in mind that when the heater flaps are enabled that the 2 center dash vents will cutoff and divert to the footwells. The 2 out dash vents will still blow air.

The wiper motor begins to move but stops with very small movement.

Chances are something id binding under the dash or the wiper fitting is stripped out. Assume the Lotus position and inspect the wiper mechinism. You may remove the dash glove box by removing 3 screws and dropping out the liner through the bottom. The wiper motor is just behind the glove box.

The coolant level sensor lights intermittently, it has the dual metal overflow tank system.

Each header tank has a wire going to it on spade connectors make sure both are hooked up. Looking forward from the rear of the car. the left one is for the chargecooler and the right on is for the engine coolant. The recovery tank for the engine coolant is located behind the left rear wheel arch in the trunk area concealed behind a velcroed fabric piece.

The parking light switch had issues but I was able to disassemble it and carefully clean it- but still the right park lights and dash lights don't illuminate.

Check for grounded out wires from accident.

The single airbag is blown and I am seeking a reasonably priced replacement, or new MOMO wheel.

Momo adapters to Lotus are hard to find. It still can be had. There are a few people that are trying to sell their air bag wheel because they went with a Momo conversion.

The speedometer reads ~30MPH always, and the ODO doesn't work.

Remove the binacale by loosening I think it is a silver 10mm bolt under the dash near the center off the binnacle. 2 phillips screws one on each underside of binnacle cover. Lift and rotate cover right 1/2 a turn to remove cover. put a towel or something so you don't sctratch the top of the stero pod leather when removing cover. Remove speedo by using a straw dipped in liquid soap under rubber ring and speedo case and take to speedo shop like ATP in Bloomington, MN (fast service) if cable is not broken. If it is an electronic speedo check circuit before sending speedo out.

When left turn signal is on, the exterior lights work but the dash indicator blinks once and goes out- the right side works properly.

Just regular eletronics check for grounds and blinker module by reversing right and left leads to see if the problem follows or stays the same. That will tell you where the problem is.

Need a new windshield, window washer bottle, spare, jack, toolkit.

Contact Guy Theirens from the Turbo Esprit list as he has a good supply of used SE body parts. the spare tire is a part of the crash protection of the front. Some race tracks will not let you run without in place.

Good Luck,

Thank you for the thoughtful reply.

We haven't had it on the lift yet, brakes are tomorrows project.

The AC runs but still no cold air, although if you move the knob full hot, it does get hot, if you move it full cold it gets slightly below outside air temp. I think maybe the missing red dot left relay may have something to do with that.

The wiper motor runs with no external movement now- tomorrow I will get to that.

Got all the lights working, the #6 fuse(right run lights and dash lights) was missing, I think it should be same as #5 5amp(left run lights). It blew and was drawing 9+ amps, DPO had run the fogs off it- duh. Now draws ~4Amps.

Got the fogs running on their proper circuit.

Took the airbag off, looks like I could get a GM one and swap covers. Anyone know the exact guts I need?

The Speedo/straw trick worked wonderfully, couldn't have done it without. Got the speedo working, need a plastic worm gear to get the odo working- it is stripped.

Blinker indicator works now, bad gound on the front left lamp.

NEW PROBLEM
Right headlight motor comes up 1/8 of the way and stops.

Took it up to 140 on the way home, what a solid car!

I have heard of many wheel sensors and calipers sticking that cause the symtoms you describe about the ABS.

The AC runs but still no cold air, although if you move the knob full hot, it does get hot, if you move it full cold it gets slightly below outside air temp. I think maybe the missing red dot left relay may have something to do with that.

Check the freon, the crash may have caused it to leak. the A/C components are right up front with everything. Use UVA dye with the freon, run the A/C for a while and check the car with a black light. If the air flap diverter is stuck even if the A/C is working it will not make the 2 inside vents work well.

The wiper motor runs with no external movement now- tomorrow I will get to that.

It's really fast to drop the glove box out the bottom. just 3 screws in the inside of it and push it down. May have to fold it in a little. It gives a great view of the wiper motor and the rods right through the glove box door and gives you much needed working room. While you are at it, locate the ALDL cable and unwind and untape it for future use. You may one day want to perform diagnositcs with a lap top PC with the car in motion. It will tell you just about everything about the engine/turbo performance as the ECU reads it.

Great job on the lights!!!

Took the airbag off, looks like I could get a GM one and swap covers. Anyone know the exact guts I need?

Check out the air bag from a Pontiac Grand Prix. I recall someone out there driving around with Pontiac stamped on the wheel cover, Yuck.

The Speedo/straw trick worked wonderfully, couldn't have done it without. Got the speedo working, need a plastic worm gear to get the odo working- it is stripped.

Can't tell you how long I struggled to get my speedo out till I used the liquid soap trick. Got that idea from kids bicycle handle grip instructions and clean up is a snap instead of using oily lube.

NEW PROBLEM
Right headlight motor comes up 1/8 of the way and stops.

Hmmm....Might be stripped plastic gears, if you disconnect power there is a black plastic knob behind the light pod if turned will raise and lower the pod manually. If not Tim Engel from my local Lotus club posted this inexpensive fix for the light pods.

1987 - 1988 Headlight Kit
Kit contains 3 precision machined Delrin bushings and excellent rebuilding
instructions.

Each kit will do ONE headlight motor.

Fits right the first time! No filing or sanding needed!
1987-1988 Fiero
1987-1992 Firebird
1988-1996 Corvette
1988-2002 Lotus Esprit
The 1987-1988 Fieros, 1987-1992 Firebirds, 88-96 Corvette, and 88-02 Lotus
Esprit, have the GM second generation redesigned headlight motors. They are
very durable and very long lasting. They are also easy to rebuild when they
fail! If your headlights fail to rise and the motors keep spinning this
rebuild kit will solve your problem. If the motor(s) don't run you may have
a wiring or controller problem. If one actuator fails and the other
probably isn't far behind.

Save over $8.00 when comparing to the Eckler's Corvette Headlight Rebuild
Kit.

Headlight motor gaskets are in stock now!! The side cover gaskets are
sometimes very brittle and may fall apart when the cover is removed to
replace the drive pins. Order new side cover gaskets to ensure a quality
rebuild! The die used was laser cut so the gaskets are very precise.

Note: There are no rivets to drill out when you rebuild these motor
assemblies. All parts are held together with screws and bolts, and are
easy to disassemble.

Been getting a few things sorted. Removed a few air bubbles from the rear brake lines- the ABS light still comes on and the abs motor still activates, now for the fronts.

Charge cooler is not cooling, likely will do the impeller soon- did notice a lot of rust in the tank- is the recommended coolant 50-50 water-coolant mix? Also the unit seems to be "losing" water, yet no leaks on the ground.

Need the 2 fiberglas ducts which cover the left oil cooler in the front.

Need a wiring diagram and fuse/relay diagram from someones handbook.

Got the A/C recharged and it works marginally now, low pressure side was as high as 42# but still had occasional air bubbles in the "eye" in the front.

Will disassemble the right headlight motor and figure out why it will only go up a little, it seems it is electrical- not mechanical in nature, as it will go up with the knob.

Did these cars come with a JVC CD changer?

Did these cars come with airhorns?

Got pulled over yesterday for exhibition of speed, rounding a corner at a stoplight (green) at 5mph and accelerating hard to 35, fortuantely sweet talked my way out. Of course he said I was doing 45 and laid rubber and swerved into the other lane-NOT.

I am really enjoying this forum, thanks
Erik

Hopefully the brakes do not have some sort of leak or calipers binding, if not check the wheel sensor after bleeding the system.

They say to check the Chargecooler impeller at 18K, it is known to lose vanes in the 20K's. 50-50 water-coolant mix is correct. It is normal to lose a bit of coolant and a little more when the coolant is not circulating.

Post an ad or try and get them from SJ.

Did you use freon with a dye in the A/C and try a trace with a UVA light?

Good Luck,
Calvin

Everyone uses the Fiero parts for the headlight fix.
