Hi! My 1995 Esprit S4 needs to have bearings replaced and I was wondering if anyone had any tips. My mechanic isn't worried about replacing the front bearings if that turns out to be the problem, but is concerned that special tools may be required to do the rear bearings. Anybody know anything about this? He's a talented Mercedes/Ferrari/just about anything else guy, but has never done this before on a Lotus.

Thanks for any help.

Fronts are easy, but they need to be torqued to a drag spec. Pull on the lug nut with a fish spring scale for something like 2.75 lb of drag.

the rear need to be pressed out, no special tools required... Well other than a large socket for the axel nut, long breaker bar, and a torx bit for the disc brake. Rear axel nut is torqued to 200ftlb.

For my 1989 Esprit, the front bearings are 1980 to '82 Toyota Celica parts (if memory serves me right). The Esprit's rear wheel bearing is the front bearing for:

the Renault Fuego 1980-'82? (guess)
the Dodge Monaco FWD
the Eagle Medallian FWD
the Eagle Premier FWD

Buying them from Lotus can be pricey. UAP Napa or Bumper-to-Bumper sources were the cheapest for me in western Canada.

PS: I suggest using SKF bearings (usually from France) or FAG bearings (made in Canada or Germany). I have had very good success with these brands.
