Well living in upstate NY it is time to put my baby (a 94 s4) to bed for a bit. The good part is I can get some things taken care of over the winter, one being a speedometer that seems to have quit, sort of. It gives incredible speed readings like 30 whenyou are doing 65/70 or 130 when you are doing 35/40 or anywhere in between. It looks to be a VDO gauge.

My question is, are repair shops going to be able to fix it or do I just need to bite the bullet and buy a new one. I know the install isn't half as involed as getting the binnacle cover off.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First thing to do is find out if new ones are still available and if they are at what price.

You may find repair is your only option.

I had exactly the same problem a couple of months ago with the speedo of my S4 (MY 1994). Had it fixed and they charged me around EUR 100 for the repair (excl. taking it out and reinstalling it).
I am not sure whether you can get a new one for the same money.

New speedos are not available. Pending on what is wrong with the speedo it will be $100-180 or so.

The jewel movement is suspect with your symptoms, maybe the worm drive.

To take off the binicale cover is a snap. I can do it in less than 10 min. 2 screws on each end of the cover and 1 10mm bolt and it is off.

Detailed instructions from Sanj's website.

If you need details for the actual speedo removal just ask. Feff use some sort of lube, I like to use a drop or 2 of liquid soap under the rubber retaining ring.

Good luck,

Time for a rebuild. I think the mechanical speedos all need a rebuild sooner or later. I've rebuilt three from an S2, SE and S4.

Getting it out is the tough part as I've been forced to cut the rubber fitting and simply replace it when re-installing. Most speedo places have the rubber gasket when reinstalling. Here's the palce I've used in the past www.paspeedo.com/

Don't cut the rubber.

Dip a straw in liquid dish soap and hold your finger over one tip of the straw. Use a knife blade to lift up on a few places of the rubber ring and apply a few drops of soap in a few places between the ring and speedo body. Then twist the speedo back and forth and it will slide out the front. Afterwards just rinse the ring and wipe off the speedo body.

Hi JRJAJS:

I'm a former Up-State New Yorker; Orangeman, Class of '81...been in Tampa since '87.

I'm having speedo (and tach) sticking problems, too. To the credit of my Esprit Group on Yahoo! I've diagnosed the problem as the needles touching the lenses in certain spots; causes all kinds of crazy, inconsistent readings like you're experiencing. I determined this was the case by using small suction cups on the lens and pulling them back "gently" while driving. The guages work fine. I haven't fixed it yet, but it's only a couple spacers and about an hours work away. Best of luck with your situation. I hope it's something equally simple.
