anyone experienced a similar problem on a V8. Engine died whilst driving along, wouldn't restart. The fuse to the coils was blown, and a new one blew immediately.

I haven't really looked into it, I assume the coils are somewhere in the centre of the engine near the starter motor. I guess it could be the coil(s) itself or maybe a wiring fault. Anyone had similar? Is it a big job to get to the coils...

I had the car relayed to Sinclaires (lotus independant in Romford, Essex) who i know. Unfortunately electrical guy's off on holiday and so they won't start on it till monday......

I would suspect you either have a coil that shorted or more likely that the wiring harness rubbed insulation off and you are shorting to engine ground.

The coil packs are underneath the intake plenum towards the front. Not that difficult to get too, just time consuming... hence I would check for worn insulation first.

My check engine light kept comming on anytime the car when over 4000rpm. The dealer checked it out and one of the coils were bad. The car ran okay... just a little slow and had a rough idle. The replacement coil and installation at the Lotus dealer was $450 (which was covered under my warranty). The car runs 100 times better now.

But my car never stalled during the coil problem. The dealer invoice stated the coil and a gasket was need to replace the coil.
