Hey Guys,

As the temp drops here in Philly, I have noticed for the first time that my S4 has a real quick puff of blue smoke on a cold start.

It does not do it all the time, only if the car sits for a few days then I go and start it. There is no smoke after the initial puff on the start. Is this a concern?

(The temp has been in the 40's at night.)

Thanks in advance for any help.

I have the same problem with mine. I am being tolled it is the turbo leaking a small amount of oil and then burning off.

Could be the turbo seal staring to wear or maybe a valve seal is starting to get weak and allow a small amount of oil to go past the seal.

I used Mobil 1 for 1500 miles and suffered from this.

I then stuck some thicker oil in it and the problem went away.

A compression test revealed that the bores, rings and guides were fine.

It might simply be caused by using oil which is too thin.

Hi All,
Yes, Pat is right ...
The oil may come from the turbo-bearings or come from one or more valve guides or maybe there is oil present in the airbox (comes from the crankcase breather).

What oil are you using ?

I recommend one that has a HIGH second number (=high temp viscosity) like the Mobil 1 xW50 or the Castrol 10W60. Donot use a 0W30 or similar !!!

Thank you for the replies.
I am using Mobil 1 15-50

I just checked my pre purchase inspection and it stated that there was oil seepage from the turbo compressor. It states that it is very minor....only seepage.

Does this mean the turbo will need to be rebuilt?

or something along those lines.

it doesn't necessarily need to be rebuilt now, but eventually it will. When is unknown. Turbos can last a logn time or a short time once the seals start to go. A good indication of when it needs to be replaced is when you throw down a James Bond smoke screen when boosting. Ask me how I know this

Sounds like you had the experience already.

Would a BOV help?

Make sure you let the car cool down before shutting it off after a hard run.

I don't think a BOV would help in any direct way.
