Yippeeeeeeeee

It works!!!!!

I went to my local meet tonight (the only esprit) and when I got there let the car run for a bit to coole the turbo then popped the cover and stuffed my hand on the charge cooler. Guessed I was either gonna burn my hand or have a big grin on my face. It was the grin. The inlet side f the cooler is quite cold. The exhaust side was cool but not cold. Still I guess the fact the turbo and manifold were glowing red!! I think I am going to have to get some sort of heat resistent material for under the cooler and maybe invest in one of those turbo wraps and maybe some exhaust tape. any thoughts???

Cheers

Hi Alan,

Don't expect it to be icy cold. Running you engine after stopping to cool the turbo will have allowed the CC to get a little warmer than it was when you stopped (no air at the rad to cool it). had you got to it straight after stopping i bet it would have been cooler still.
I think your own evidence that the turbo and manifold were red hot but the CC was cool, has pretty much confirmed the job a good one

At least you don't have 'OTUS CHARGECOO' burned into the palm of your hand

Think real hard about those wraps and tapes. I have heard horror stories from people who wrapped an exhaust with them. Like a couple K miles later, their new header was rusted out to nothing. Haven't heard of anyone wrapping an Esprit exhaust with them. I think I would leave it alone.

A little off subject, about the heat-insulation wraps. I thought about adding some to my 87 HCI, & I'm no engineer, but I fear that it will retain too much heat in certain areas (e.g., w/in turbo housing) & maybe lead to premature failure. We all know that the turbo can create & take extreme heat, but maybe when its glowing red after a run, it's emanating/ disbursing the heat, & retaining that heat might not be good.

I have pondered a way to block some of the heat coming off of the turbo too. I was thinking of making a carbon fiber shield instead of wrapping it. I think just blocking the radiated heat would make a big difference.

Some good suggestions there, The heatshield idea seems a good one. Downside is to where to flow the hot air out of the engine bay?

Must say that while I love my car to bits, not having Lotus burned into my hand was a result LOL.

Cheers

Here are a couple of links for just that.....I don't thing carbonfibre would hold up very well to that kind of heat...

I used DEI products to shield both the chargecooler and airbox from radiant heat.

I wouldn't wrap it. I have had headers go to pieces on a street car that was wrapped.

I did wrap my Esprit exhaust. Drove it for a bit on the street. I raced the car in a track day. The exhaust manifold cracked and blew out the exhaust gasket. Coincidence? Maybe so and related to the track day, but, I didn't re-wrap it when I went back in to fix everything.
