A few weeks ago I the inner beam stopped working in my 94 S4. Well I finally got around to checking it out. At the advice of JAE, I checked the relays first. So out comes the trusty owners manual. Open it up, find the relays. Pop the front and notice something not in the pictures. First off in the picture, it has little fuses on one side only, in between a set of relays to the left and right of them. Well I have fuses in between on both sides. I figure, no problem as I am only interested in the relays and they should be right, right? Wrong. I pull the relays for the main and dip beams and nothing happens. Lights stay on. huh? So I put those back and proceed to pull the relay, marked in the manual for horn, and the lights no longer work. Of course this relay seems to be different from all of the rest. Looks like it has one more switch in it, for on/off main beams, if that is what I am trying to say. So far I have hit RS Strauss, Pep Boys, Advanced and Radio Shack and they all looked at me like I have 2 heads. Hopefully a specialty electronics store will have them. i don't want to think what Lotus wants to charge me for this part.

So do I have some in between SE/S4 or something? I know I have an earlier S4 as I have no passenger side airbag. COuld this be the difference? Any way I can find out what fuses/relays do what for my
car?

The wiring harness changed at some point along the way. Early cars had fuses on each side of the relay bar. "Revised Harness" cars had relays only on the left side of the relay bar. So your car is the earlier version.

Federal, LHD, Early S4
Starting at the back of the relay bar closest to the windshield, on the right side of the relay bar when facing forward, going forward on the left and coming back on the right... the sockets are:

Left side, back to front
A Wiper Delay Module
B Not used... open
D HRS/ Mirror relay
.. space
E Radiator fan relay
33 Fuse, 15A Alarm
25 Fuse, 15A Headlamp lift motor
26 Fuse, 15A Headlamp lift motor
27 Fuse, 15A Front fox lamps
I Main beam relay
F Dip beam relay (front on left side of relay bar)

Right side, front to back
G Front fog relay (front on right side of relay bar)
J Start drop out relay
32 Fuse, 20A Powerwash
35 Fuse, 3A Heated mirrors
34 Fuse, 20A LH window
31 Fuse, 20A Horn
30 Fuse, 20A RH window
H Horn relay
C Headlamp pod delay module
K Tell tale control module
L Low fuel delay module

Dip Beam relay = SPDT (single pole, double throw)
DRL relay .... = SPDT
Drop out relay = SPDT
SPDT = single pole, double throw
.... = changeover (this or that, as opposed to on-off)
Terminals:
85 & 86 = solenoid (low current trigger circuit)
30 = Power input.
87 = NO output(Normally Open, OFF until switched on)
87a = NC output (Normally Closed,ON until switched off)

Main Beam relay = DPST (double pole, single throw)
Commonly known as = SPST 5-Terminal.
It's electrically equivalent to a common 4-terminal SPST relay, but with two #87 outputs. The two outputs are electrically redundant and just a place to connect more wires to the same input circuit. A SPST 5-terminal can be used to replace a standard SPST relay (4-terminal). The second #87 terminal will just go un-used.
Terminals:
85 & 86 = solenoid (low current trigger circuit)
30 = Power input.
87 = NO output (Normally Open, OFF until switched on)
87 = NO output -same, just a 2nd terminal for more wires.

The Lotus wiring schematic illustration labels the output terminals as 87 (NO) and 87a (NC), but the actual contact schematic is drawn with two normally open terminals. That would be two 87's, or a SPST 5-terminal relay.

Buy the highest current rated relays you can find. I like the Bosch relays sold by Waytek Wire. You can call in or order online at:
www.waytekwire.com website

Click on the Catalog PDF link at the top of the page. Scroll down and click on page 52, Relays. At the top of the page you will see two charts for "High Capacity" relays (50 amp) and "Standard" relays (40 amp).

Sockets identical to those used by Lotus are on page 53.

Also click on the link to order a hardcopy of their catalog. It's free and a great reference book for electrical items.
