rear spoiler functionality?

I was just wondering how functional the rear spoilers on the later model esprits are. Lets say from S4 and on. Which ones are the most functional? And are they really necessary at all? The european V8-GT has only a little rising lip at the end of the decklid. Is this really all the esprit needs? Are the other spoilers more for looks?
