I know the NON-SE model isnt the best platform to start with modifications, but is it possible relatively easily to bring it to SE status?

Just wondering.

P.S. Rich - If you see this, I got your email but haven't had a chance to respond. Will get to you soon.

It really all depends on how insistent you are that it looks like a stock SE. It isn't hard to plumb in an intercooler. Electric pump, small fluid resevior, radiator, possibly mounted in the back. It wouldn't look stock, but it would perform the same. Then a chip to bump the boost pressure to SE/S4/S4s levels.

I have a friend with an 89' non-SE, and he is looking at doing exactly this, it shouldn't be too hard.

Hmm, you wouldnt happen to have a pic of the engine bay on a NON-SE would you?

The mechanical conversion is fairly straight forward as Gary mentioned. However the ECU and sensors are different. Converting to the SE+ ECU would probably be easier if you just replaced the rear wiring harness.

If you stay with the Non-SE ECU, then there's only one upgrade chip available, and it pales before anything for the ChargeCooled models. Talk to Marcus.

I believe the sensors are all the same as an SE. The ECU is different, but the plugs are the same so all you have to do is pull all the pins from the plugs and put them in the right spots for the SE ECU. That is from a conversation I had with Squelch, who knows a bit about the ECU's himself. The air temp sensor is in a different (stoopid) place, but if you put a Genuine OEM chargecooler on, it should be easy enough to move over.

Hi hi,
maybe Kylie just has inverted the pic by mistake .....

BTW: The MAT-sensor on non-c/cooled engines is in the airbox, not after the turbo like on the c/cooled engines ... you see the problem !?

Oh, learn something new everyday!

I didn't realize the ECU was different between SE and non-SE. I'm pretty sure my friend doesn't either.

I never put too much thought into that side of it (since it's not my car and all), but it is sounding slightly tougher all of a sudden. Ecu swaps, MAT sensor re-positioning, nothing huge, but an added pain, no doubt.

Kylie, that is a clean engine pic, very nice!

The Esprit ECU is a bespoke item, correct? ie. I can't go down to the XXXXX dealer and pick up the part number YYYYY and plug it in...

Hmmm...

You can pick up the ECU at your local auto parts store.
89 non-SE: GM-AC Delco 01228707,16198267
SE: GM-AC Delco 01228708

It is the Memcal and the PROM that you can't get like that, but you can swap them over from your existing unit, should you replace the ECU. I am not sure if the Memcal from the 89 non-SE will fit in the SE ECU or not. If not, you will need a new Memcal and the chip.

Marcus, _any_ chance on some code for the non-SE ECU but with the temp sensor located to after the turbo? Just thinking.

The connectors on the Non SE ECU are different than the SE ECU, but the pins are the same.
You can de-pin and re-pin to the other connectors, then use the SE ECU.

The main concern about going to the SE or S4s program and "turning up the boost" is the additional fueling needed.
You can get the plenum nozzle and secondary injectors from Jeff at JAE, but then you'll need to modify the intake tube, or add the chargecooler to complete the intake plumbing.
Also, if your going to add a chargecooler, it has the bung to mount the MAT sensor, or you could have a bung installed in the plenum chamber backplate.
This is similar to what we did on a 1986 Bosch injected Esprit when converting it to Delco injection.

Hi Dr. Hess,
Yes I have two non-SE-programs here for relocated MAP-sensor (0.8 bar and 1 bar). If you need one for playing around with it, please let me know.

Cheers

Marcus,
I may do that in a few months. My current Esprit project is a stainless exhaust manifold and that may take me a while to prototype. Picked up the 4" 11ga box steel today to build the jig out of.

John,
I had the plug thing backwards. I remember you saying the plugs had to be re-done.

Why go through the bother.

Just buy an SE or later.

Not the work in the engine compartment. The plumbing for the chargecooler coolant going up front just pay the few extra K and your will be way ahead of the money game.

Unless of course you enjoy tinkering more than driving. The by all means go for it.

My personal email has been hosed up with a virus the kids got from one of those Anamie sites.

I'll send you an email from work.
