I just installed the Red Race #6 chip on my S4s.
As soon as I turned the car on, I have a constant Check Engine light.
I connected the FreeScan and it's refusing to comunicate with the ECU.

Is it normal for the FreeScan to not comunicate with these chips?
Why would the Check Engine light come on?

Now I have all these visions of the car blowing up because I messed with it.

Obviously I am not going to drive it until I have this figured.
All I can tell so far is that it sounds much better when it's iddling and also there is no more revs going up and down when the A/C comes on - revs are constant all the time.

Any help is appreciated.

I've done a lot of chip swaps and with modifying my own chips and putting them in, I do mean a lot.

I imagine you're not making good contact in the socket where you put the new chip in. Pull the memcal, check the seating, and make sure you have continuity with a multimeter. Also, when you do this procedure make sure you disconnect your battery. I used to do it so much I put a disconnect switch on my battery terminal.

I don't think it is the chip or the memcal. If you end up thinking your memcal is bad I have a brand new one I can sell you - I did the same thing a month ago thinking it was my memcal and it wasn't.

What was the problem back then, Ron?

Dont worry too much ... please check: "Are your fans running from the beginning ???"

If so you have inserted the chip wrong (=bad contact, wrong direction, faulty chip, faulty memcal, .... whatever)

Please report.

Cheers
Marcus (www.PUKesprit.de)

PS: Where did you purchase this chip ?

Just what Marcus said - bad contact. Started up, fans on etc. It took me many times, around four, to get it right even though I checked with a meter. I was convinced I fried something and bought a new memcal from John to help solve the problem. Turned out I just needed to get it in right.

I had never had this sort of problem before, in swapping out many iterations of chips. That is why I figure it must be the same for him - if he just purchased his red race chip then I imagine that the chip is fine.

What happens when you insert your old chip? Problem persist or go away? If it goes away it DOES NOT prove the new chip is the problem - mine did exactly the same. Just turned out the old chip I had in seated better and made better contact than the new one I was wanting to run.

Just to peak my curiousity; aren't you all minimally soldering a low profile machined socket after you extract the original dip? The cheap tin plated leaf sockets from rat shack will usually cause nothing but grief in industrial/mil applications. Plus the chip 'creeps' out after a while. Better yet is to just solder in chip carrier pins. No problems with contacts and you easily clearance the blue dust shield.

Most memories btw, are VERY unforgiving if inserted backwards. Ain't it nice that we often see vcc and vss at opposing ends? I think they do that to increase sales. I'm lucky, I bought a spare box and a few extra memcals to play with. The original ecm/memcal unit remains untouched for those 'special little kodak moments'.

I have a socket in one of mine and in the other no socket. He could solder the chip in like the original. I like the soldered in socket, works well.

That being said, I ran a chip for about 1 year with it just plugged into the memcal and held down with a shim between the chip and memcal cover. Worked like a champ and never failed.

I bought my chip of someone I know that never got to use it, so the chip was new.
I don't know who makes it, but it looks and has the same sticker as the ones shown on LEW and it says on it S4s Mark V #6 Red Racing, etc.

I soldered the new chip in exactly the same way that the old one was soldered on.

And yes, the fans come on as soon as the car is turned on, even if the engine is not on.

I just woke up, so I'll check the connections this morning. Hopefully that is all it is.

Also, if there was a fault with the memcal, wouldn't I have had trouble with the old standard chip as well before the changeover?

Hi Andecorp,
does your Chip have a white sticker on it that says:

S4s MK V
Lotus ESprit 2.2 L
Red-Race (#6)

And no checksum mentioned ?

Hi andecorp,
what you actually own is an illegal copy from our old chip #6 (old Version 1), aparently purchased from Ebay from a guy that illegal clones our work.

Here is another one of these Old-Version.1-clones on Ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7927166119&category=33597&sspagename=WD2V

I strongly recommend NOT to buy these illegal clones. You actually donot know what you will get. You also donot get any installation support and you cannot benefit from our after sales upgrade service

Well, that is just great!
That is the chip that I have.
Checked all the connections, still the same problems.

I sent you an email Marcus.
Thanks.

Hi All,
Just to let you know ... we have sorted out "andecorp´s" fake-chip problem ... turned out that the chip itself was faulty (maybe no data inside or whatever ...)
He reinserted the stock chip and everything was fine again. Will get a proper chip #6 within the next few days

Cheers

Marcus,
You should send an email to eBay when you see those things posted, telling them that you own the intellectual property and he is selling an illegal copy. They will stop it.

Hi Dr.Hess,
Thanks for the info ))
I´m already member of the Ebay VeRO (verified right owners program) and whenever I discover one of theses fakes/clones I report it to Ebay VeRO. Usually they remove the item within the next two days. But sometimes it happens that they cannot stop it anymore because the auction has already finished.
Thats why the sellers of these infringing items always use very short auction periods (3 days). From time to time these sellers also change their ebay name and begin the game from new .... It´s almost impossible to stop that. Sometimes its like fighting against windmills ...

The only annoying thing is that I daily have to browse Ebay for these clones and make reports and ... really no fun.

Cheers

Was curious about the e-bay sales. Turns out two chips are currently up for sale at this time. Are they legit or fakes?

Any chips being sold on e-bay are illegitimate clones. Always.
