Newbie Looking for Some Guidance

Hello everyone, I've spent several hours reading everything on the Fact File and Mad About Lotus sites and am seriously considering a Lotus Esprit in my future. It would replace my 928S4 which is the polar opposite (heavy front engined etc.)which has been great but looks better than it drives. I'm most concerned about whether an S4 or S4S vs. the V8 is the right choice for me. It seems a very nice example of an S4/S is low 30's. It seems the least you can get a V8 for is about 45K and that is for the 97 only. My question is the torque curve and performance of the 4 vs. the 8. I understand the statistics are very close, but owning both a high pressure turbo 4 and v8, I know first hand there is a huge diffence in feel that numbers cannot tell. For those of you who have driven both and/or just have an opinion, is it worth the extra $ for the V8?? As to reliability, how close is the V8 to the S4? Finally, any good/bad stories about Boardwalk Lotus in Redwood City Ca? Thanks to all! Cheers.

Get the newest you can afford and can find available. You're right S4s and V8 are close. Personally, I prefer the newer interior that you get from 98 up. Also, the power curve is smoother. There is slightly more power but you don't get the standard "wack on the head with a 9 iron" with the V8...

The s4s is more reliable than the v8. You do not want the s4 it is half of what the s4s is.

i bought my 99 esprit from boardwalk and i must that their sales guy (Stu) and service advisor (Bob) and lotus mechanic (Daniel) are exceptional. they have attended to all my lotus needs.

my v8 is exceptional and has been very reliable. great car from a great dealership.
