I have an '88 Esprit, I was looking into fitting a small intercooler to help keep engine temps down however...... a Chargecooler has come up for sale at a reasonable price.

Is it possible to retrofit to an older car?? I am not sure how the chargecooler and intercooler are different?? I presume water vs air?

is it too much work and better sticking with the small intercooler idea?

Just two different names for the same thing. Both could be air/air, air/water. If you're looking at controlling the IAT then it was quite popular to use a water/methanol injection system like Aquamist etc.

Trouble is with these mid engined cars is that it's very hard to make an air to air intercooler work due to the lack of cooling air to pass over a reasonable sized unit.. Air to water is a better bet but very hard and costly to sort out and fit..
Water intection might be the way to go but thats not easy as the system will reduce power unless you do some mods to increase the power...like more boost,leaner mixture,more advance etc...

The problem is that without intercooling you are losing power. Once the IAT exceeds the point when the anti-knock is triggered, boost is cut and ignition backed off. Also its not a pure water injection, its 50/50 water methanol so the intake charge has an octane boost too.
So the IAT is brought back down to a level that doesn't trigger any anti-knock protection which maintains power.

My friend converted his 89 carbed turbo to a chargecooled version. He used the air con radiator as his air con wasn't working. If yours is then you'll have to fit another radiator at front. With water to air intercooing, the pipework is much smaller than if you were air to air intercooling.
I've seen owners who tried to fit an intercooling at rear but like others have said, there's not enough cool air passing through where you would site your intercooling rad.
PNM Engineering now own my mates 89 turbo if you want to ask them what work was involved.
It didn't cost much, only the chargecooler off Ebay plus some pipework in rubber and some specially made connectors from 15mm water pipe to aircon connector. Oh and a electric water pump (Bosch off Ebay for about £60).

I have contacted PNM a couple of times about buying stuff but they never replied to me.

I live in the Tropics so aircon is essential, it was 40 degrees yesterday.

Wow, 40 degrees ambient,thats going to take a bit of cooling!Remember that charge cooling with water usually sits about 5 degrees above abient at best due to the inefficiency of the double heat swap... air,water,water,air. So your going to need a good system with a large pre-radiator and a proper charge heat exchanger... Not some bit of large pipe with a few tubes inside it..
You could speak to a guy named Lars at A H Fabrication,he can make what you need and has a lot of knowledge on the subject..

it exceptionally hot at the moment due to cyclones over QLD taking all our rain.

During the dry it averages 27 and usually about 32 during the wet season. But I think cooling is still beneficial although currently the car is taking everything in its stride, aside from the speedo not working.

Ah so your in Australia,my daughter was over there a few weeks ago and got caught up in the cyclones when she was trying to get to Brisbane,missed her skydive because of them! I would be thankful for that! wink

I was thinking you have a company called A.R.E cooling over there...Very good website where you can get a lot of information and idea's. You could do worse than giving them a call...Might have the answer for you?
