Help! Any idea what it would take to get an '84 Esprit Turbo up to compliance to pass Ca Smog requirements? I'd like to buy one that's for sale, but am unsure what funds it would take to prepare the car under CA law. I believe it is has not been registered in CA, but is currently here under different state plates. It seems to run well.

Just some advice concerning smog certification in CA. Make sure that whoever tests the car does NOT do a certification test first. Have them do a test to see whether or not the car requires work to make it pass. If you fail a certification test, you can be labled permanently as a 'gross polluter' if your test results are bad enough. If you are labled as a gross polluter, get ready to have your car tested yearly instead of every two years for the rest of the life of your car!
Believe me, I learned it the hard way with my Esprit....

As long as it has over 7,000 miles you can smog as is. Just Take it to a smog shop.

i too am having worries about getting my '84 esprit smog checked for california. i also can't get anyone to do a pretest. they all claim it is illegal. i was out all afternoon yesterday and all of today going shop to shop. most smog centers didn't even want to work on a lotus. i was wondering what kind of luck others have had passing CA smog inspection. thanks.

You guys need to get with the Lotus clubs out there and see how they do it. There is one in LA, one in San Francisco and a new one in San Diego.

Either that, or do like I did and vote with your feet. Seems like 1/2 the people in NW Arkansas are from California.

hi any smog test place can do a pretest,it is not illegal for the shop.just request a pretest,theres a possibilty your 84 esprit will have to go to a test only center for a smog check.if it fails the pretest than it will need to be repaired before doing a full reg smog check.good luck.
