About two months ago, I noticed that the ABS light on the dash board was becoming illuminated intermittently. However, when the engine is turned off and then back on again, the light goes out. After contacting my local Lotus specialist, I was told that they would be unable to diagnose the problem unless the light was illuminated. Obviously, due to the intermittent nature of the problem this was not possible. However, in the last few weeks, the brakes have started to feel different. That is, upon depressing the peddle, I initially feel resistance, but then the peddle seems to 'jerk' downward slightly, before I feel resistance again. At this point a 'clicking' noise is apparent as if the ABS is kicking in before it should. An unexplained rattle can also be heard at this point which continues for a second or so after the brakes are released.
However, if the ABS light is illuminated when braking, the brake peddle feels firm and seems to be operating normally (I'm guessing that when the ABS light is illuminated, the ABS is not functioning?).
Has anyone experienced similar problems and can shed some light on the cause of these issues? Any help would be much appreciated.

I have exactly the same problem (my one is the S4). Last week I sent my car for service at the Lotus local dealer. They said I have to change the whole ABS system because they can not fix the problem. I didn't change it yet and try to find a way to fix it instead. Last time when I had this problem I changed the Accumulator Oxygen Charger (Part # A082J6138S) and it seemed to solve the problem. Unfortunately, this time it didn't fix my S4 braking problem.

Hate to add a "me too" but me too (94 S4 as well!)

Flashing ABS light on first startup, stop and restart engine and it goes away. Only seems to happen when the car has been standing fort a few days, and usually when weather has been wet. No adverse braking effect, so I'm ignoring it at the moment.... Didn't have any ABS in the Elise anyway...
