Greetings!

The headliner in my 84 Turbo Esprit has gotten loose in spots, giving the impression of air bubbles in the fabric overhead.

Is there an easy fix for this? (on a 1-10 scale of automotive fix-it-yourself aptitude, I'm about a 2).

Yes it's very easy. Just cut a nick in the material with a craft knife in the centre of each bubble or better stiff, put glue in a syringe.
The other way is to buy spray contact adhesive. Some come with additional tube nozzles, similar to fine lubricant sprays. Insert this into a hole or nick in the centre of the bubble and spray the glue in. Leave for a few minutes to go off then press the headlining to the roof.

Cheers,

This is how I fixed my head liner(the one on the lift out section) back in 1998 on my '89 non-SE.

Remove roof section.

mark cloth location with light score lines.

Gently pull off the cloth from the foam. The adhesive between the foam and the cloth fails causing the bubbles. The foam deteriorates.

I washed the cloth on gentle cycle, cold water in the washing machine to get the rest of the foam residue off. No shrinkage.

I cleaned off the old foam off the roof with gasoline.(Xylene, hexane would work okay)

Purchase good quality 1/4 inch foam from a cloth store and cut to fit the cloth, leave about 3/8 inch cloth border.

I used 3M Super 77 Spray adhesive to first bond foam to the roof.

Then spray adhesive again on the foam and apply cloth.

No problems since, even here in Louisiana.

Ask, if you have questions.

Orrrr....

You can just rip the whole thing off, sand it smooth, sew a replacement out of color matching vinyl or leather and glue it into place with rubber cement.

That's what I did (except I used an upholstery cement, which sucks, so I need to redo it. Only I really notice it though.)

In the USA it can be found at most of the larger hardware stores.
