Do I need to worry about heavy rain entering the vents in the engine cover on a GT3? The Elise I owned had a similar design but I never really worried about it...presumably the water is channelled away or just evaporates off when the engine is hot? I'd only worry about damp electrics etc.

The engine cover is designed to flow water away from anything important, it will be perfectly fine. smile

  • NB If you can, keep the nose pointed uphill though as water on the bodywork mainly drains backwards, it's not a problem but it stops it pooling on the car. Goes for rain and cleaning the car. It's not the end of the world but saves puddles!

yep
and all engine covers from 1994 onwards are better
the older models have engine covers with louvres yust on top of the turbo and exhaust manifold.
this is said to be(next to the poor quality)one of the reasons why the manifold crack's.
the engine cover on the s4 model (and onward) is closed above the exhaust manifold.

That's not the cause at all, the manifold is invisible from above as the engine is slanted so any water which made it through the engine cover wouldn't end up anywhere near the manifold - However, the manifold is right next to the left rear wheel which splashes water all over it when it's actually hot, this is the problem and the cause of cracking manifolds.

i new it had something to do with water
but why did they then cover the left side of the newer engine covers
i know of a thread where was discussed to cover a little piece of the louvres from the inside.

Because on the old covers the water would pool in the spark plug wells.

My old NA which didn't have a glass back had a sheet of metal the whole width of the louvres to stop this. Some had a smaller piece just on the left (over the spark plug wells). My SE doesn't have anything as the glass back means water doesn't get anywhere near there (in fact my engine cover is rarely fitted).

Look down on a 4 cylinder engine and you'll not see the manifold, it's underneath the head. This picture (although rubbish) shows you what I mean.
