I want to get back into a bit of pier/beach fishing this summer as I used to really enjoy doing it as a kid, but I have forgotten absolutely everthing about what kit you need.

I don't really have a budget, so it will be on a shoestring but I am after some advice on what bits and bobs you will need to go mackerel fishing off a pier.

Obviously a rod and reel before anyone says it, but what kind of rod? what kind of reel? etc..

Pls help!

For pier fishing a light uptide rod or carp rod, an open spool reel, 3 to 4 ounce pearl shaped lead bombs, mackerel feathers, 20lb main line on the reel with 20 foot of 50lb shock leader line, or if wanting to float fish then buy a sea float with weight, some barrel swivels [50lb] some 6/8mm beads, some 0-2 size hooks and some elastic bands to put on the line to set the depth of fishing. Also remember that to fish off the pier and shores you still require a rod/environment license the same as course fishing. All your equipment can be bought via Ebay or mail order fishing catalogues for around £30 as you don't have to spend a fortune. The complete setups are available on Ebay for £24.99 plus £9 delivery for everything you need apart from the floats, if you want floats they are priced at £5.99 plus £1.99 delivery for 4 complete with weights.HTH.

Excellent! Thanks a lot for that info, it's exactly the kind of help I was after.

Without sounding like a simpleton, what else will i need for a day or two's fishing trip with my brother?

Things like a bucket, knife etc..??

I have a small mental note of things i might need, but any help from an expert would be appreciated..

Thanks a lot!

A filleting knife, possibly a mackerel or sand eel [you can buy this frozen] for bait if your not using feathers, make sure a sheet or 2 of paper to absorb the juices from bait, a couple of clothes to wipe your hands on. A bucket for your catch and I always find baby wipes handy too.

Absolute Rubbish

Environment Agency Website said:
You need a valid Environment Agency Rod Licence if you are aged 12 or over and fish for salmon, trout, freshwater fish, smelt or eel in England (except the River Tweed), Wales, and the Border Esk and its tributaries in Scotland.
