I went to see my first bout yesterday as a friend was competing. Very good fun.

Anyone else been to one?

Are those the events where people skate around trying to knock eachother over?

Just signed up for the "fresh meat" intake with a local team. Looking forward to it but feel sick just thinking about it. A couple of my friends skate and adore it, at my friends recent bout 4 people went away with either fractures or broken bones. I'm sure I will know soon enough if it is the sport for me.

What is the objective of roller derby? It looks like it could be quite a good fun spectator sport.

What are you trying to achieve, how do you score points, how long does it last and are there things you can't do?

Basically you have 2 teams of 5 on track (with 5 others sat on the team beanch)

4 players per team are blockers, 1 is the jammer (who does the point scoring)

The aim is for the jammer to maker her way through the pack, the first one through is declared 'Lead Jammer' then the jammers race around the track so they can make their way through the pack again. every opponant they pass after their first pass is 1 point. so a maximum of 5 points can be scored per pass.

the game last 60 mins, and split into 2 periods.
within those periods are 'jams' which last 2 mins. with 30 secs between each jam.
So each jammer is trying to score as many points within 2 mins as possible.
The lead jammer can call off a jam early if she wishes (this is the benifit of getting through a pack early - she can make her scoring pass then call it off before the opposing jammer gets to score)

But it is a full contact sport: the girls are allowed to use their bodies to block an opponant: you cant throw a punch, hit the head or trip an opponant.
Legal blocking zones extend from the knee to the shoulders and (since this is a female dominated sport, it makes it easier to explaine) from one bra strap, round the front, to the other strap: effectively you cant hit an opponant between the shoulder blades.

this video explains it fairly well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2W2b1WBmm4

Thread Revival!

Went and watched my first bout today as MrsHorneyMX5 had her first public bout for The Basingstoke Bullets. I quite enjoyed it although I'm still a little fuzzy on the rules.

I follow the Big Bucks High Rollers. I keep meaning to go along and check out their training session as I'd like to know what is involved to be a ref, I ice skate and do a bit of roller blading but not sure how well I'd get on with quads.

Refs can use Inlines, Though quads are encouraged.

It is good fun.
Refs need to be able to forget they have skates on and skate while rarely facing the way they are going: Its a means of getting your eyes in the right place to see what is going on in a pack.

I dont know how Big Bucks train theirs: but many leagues have new refs train with the new skaters until they pass the skating min skills.

Only noticed this thread, very rarely come in sports section. Been playing roller derby for about 20 months now, love it, hadn't skated for years when I started, and never skated on quads skates before that.
