Bad luck Jensen. Well done Ryan. Not a surprise that motorsport should get less votes than football I guess...

I voted for Jennifer Ennis , She has shown true grit in coming back from injury to due what she did in the World championships this year , and , unlike Button and Giggs she isnt well paid for her chosen sport , that , to me , shows true personality and determination ...

So what has this Ryan person achieved in 2009 that makes him deserving of the award?

Why? What Giggs has achieved in his career is ground breaking, not to mention the fact that he's a decent family man that doesn't live up to the usual football player stereotypes.

And I'll think you'll find that footballers haven't won the award very often:

Football SPOTY
1966 Moore, Bobby
1990 Gascoigne, Paul
1998 Owen, Michael
2001 Beckham, David
2009 Giggs, Ryan

Motorsport SPOTY
1959 Surtees, John
1961 Moss, Stirling
1973 Stewart, Jackie
1986 Mansell, Nigel
1992 Mansell, Nigel
1994 Hill, Damon
1996 Hill, Damon

Voted for Jenson. Perhaps there were more Man Utd fans than Motorsport fans who voted.

Anyone else notice Jenson looking a touch bitter at not winning?!

Lewis Hamilton only came 3rd last year, no?

Ryan has had more successful years than the past year.

I think it should be judged by judges, not telephone votes. Otherwise, it becomes a popularity contest, and people who have excelled in less popular sports tend not to do as well.

yes The public voted for Ryan to acknowledge his career, rather than his achievements in 2009, which I think is slightly unfair, but there you go.

Personally I believe there were more worthy winners there, it's just that football is the favoured chav sport, and the BBC is becoming the chav channel of choice (the BBC has degraded in the last ten years, and in your lists look at the frequency of footballers winning it and how it increases, and how the racing drivers decrease...).

Plus of course the sample size was probably quite small compared with other years because I'm told there was an important reality TV final happening on the other side wink

He's pleased a number of football fans with phones, and to other football fans that he may not have pleased, he has simply BEEN a footballer. That is as good a reason as any for them for pick up their phones too.

What makes you think the BBC has degraded in the past 10 years? With programmes like Life on Mars, Planet Earth and their World Cup/EURO 2008 coverage, I think the BBC is better than ever.
Probably another discussion for another time, but the general standard of programming and the "dumbing down" has just got worse and worse. They try, I'll give them that, but their documentaries are so dumbed down they're just boring now. There was a big debate on Panorama about it, and David Attenborough was very vocal on the matter (he agrees with me!).

And if we skip back 30 years, people complained that the BBC wasn't in touch with the younger generation.

As you say, a discussion for another time but I think the BBC do an amazing job, especially their online prescene. I think Attenborough's main complaint was the dumbing down of BBC One; that is a true but only because of the rise of BBC Two and BBC Four.
yes BBC Four is a godsend, yes, although I think they could do better. My comment was mainly directed at the viewing demographic for BBC One at 7pm-9pm on a Sunday evening...

Ryan Giggs winning SPOTY was a complete and utter fucensoreding disgrace, he's a Man Utd CcensoredT end of.... wink The result should have been :
