Can anyone explain this to me??

Up until last season, we had the Guinness Premiership, National League 1 and National League 2.

With rugby now having decided to move in the same direction as football and third world dictators to come up with ever more fanciful names for leagues which could easily have remained as divisions 1, 2, 3 and so on, we have the Premiership, the Championship and League 1.

OK, I don't see the point in the renaming, but I understand how it works. What I don't understand is why Birmingham & Solihull are in the championship? confused

At the end of the 07/08 season, they were relegated from League 1 to League 2.

Last season, they won League 2, and under normal circumstances, would've been promoted back up to League 1, but there is now an extra league in there. At the same time as League 1 becoming the championship, it also shrank from 16 clubs to 12, so how come a team being promoted from League 2 this season leapfrogged the new League 1 to end up in the Championship when Esher, for example, finished 12th in League 1 last year, and have ended up in the division below the Bees, who weren't even in League 1 last year????

I think you've misunderstood what happened.

There isn't an extra league, they've just re-branded the existing leagues. So National Division 1 is now called 'The Guinness Championship' and National Division 2 is now called 'National League 1'. Division 3 North & South are now League 2 North & South and there's no league or division bearing the number 3 anymore.

Bees won ND2 last season and got promoted to ND1, which was then re-named. Esher finished 12th is ND1 and got relegated because the bottom five needed to go down because of the reduction from 16 to 12 clubs.

It does seem unfair that Esher got relegated despite finishing above the 'regular' relegation places, but you could say it would have been just as unfair to the Bees if they'd been told they weren't getting promoted despite winning ND2.
