Im very fortunate, I got lucky in the recent ballot for tickets to next years Ryder Cup, however my eyes nearly fell out when I realised how much it was going to cost me

£370 each for a four day pass!
+ 1.5% for using a credit card
+ £20 per day to park the car ( no other way of getting to the event )

On top of this cost, which is basically coming out of my family holiday fund, the PGA want payment 1 year in advance !!!!!

Am I being a whinge arse in thinking they are taking the P*ss ?

What other events do you have to pay full price up front for, a year in advance, I couldnt think of any

And what other packages do you get to see so little of the action - I love the Ryder Cup, but don't see the point in watching it live.

Atmosphere. Went in 1997 to Valderrama, pissed down every day including practise, but the atmosphere simply makes your hairs stand up.If you plan your way round the course you'll see enough action to warrant it ( if you can get to the practise days it's a much better way of seeing the players close up), and they're are surprisingly relaxed at that point.I'm actually playing the 3 courses at Celtic Manor next week, last year when we went they were just completing a players bridge that was costing a fortune. The 2010 course is VERY American, will look good on TV,however the Monty course is actually a better golf course for me.They'll be some interesting tales to come out of the 18th the way they've designed it that's for sure!
W1TAK rest assured it'll be money well spent.

Let me know how you find it. I played there about 6 or 7 years ago, played all 3 courses. I preferred the Roman Road - but thought the main course (cannot remember the name!) was also very good.

However my mate played last week, and was not overly impressed - which suprised me as I have looked forward to going back there.

Couldn't fault it last year played the 2010 and Monty.Staff, courses, food an accomodation was all good Was so impressed the four couples that went rebooked for this yerar in the car going home!Since you've been,it's changed completely, eith esch course having bits nicked from others i believe. The views through the Usk Valley from some of the tees on the Montgomerie course are breathtaking, but no good as an event/TV course.Roll on next thursday and I will report back when home on the monday. Sorry W1TAK for taking your thread of topic....

Major let down after last year, they're simply getting too greedy.Roman Road and 2010 took 5+ hours and the Monty on saturday took 5 and fking 3/4 hours!!! Too many people on the courses, half of whom hadn't held a club in their life by the looks of it ( whatever happened to being asked for handicap certs?).All the nice little touches in the package we got last year had gone, like free course planners, shoe bag etc, cock ups with the bill, transfers to the course that didn't turn up, no hot water in our room for showers, too many young staff who seemed struggle with the basics of customer service. The courses were as cracking as usual, great views, great condition and a good variation in the 3 of them, although the yellow markers were so far forward it was taking the piss. Somewhere else will be getting our money next time.

I'm lucky enough to be a member of the 2010 which is a separate club within the Celtic manor resort but which allows full use of the whole resort......although I only play the 2010 course and I only play that weekdays as it is just too busy on weekends.....on any of the courses though you need to get out early to avoid the congestion.

A a "resort", handicaps are not asked for which for the 2010 course is ridiculous and we as members have a suggested that maybe they rethink this policy ....

The main problem is that a large majority of the visitors to the 2010 course struggle to cope even off the yellow tees at 6500yds (which are the back tee yardage or longer for many courses) yet most still ask to play off the 7100yd white tees which would mean even longer rounds and that coupled with the water equates to lost balls so slow play is a real problem .....

Luckily it does not affect the members as we can get out before the masses in allocated early morning tee slots.

I do sympathise with your comments as sometimes when I am hitting balls on the range I stand in amazement, watching virtual hackers, some who have never really played on a golf course, ready themselves for an arduous 6 hours or so. For decent players to be stuck behind some of these groups it must be a nightmare.

I can say with total conviction though that as a member, the 2010 course and clubhouse staff provide some of the best service that I have experienced at any golf course.....we only have 160 members and each is treated impeccably and from what I have witnessed they also try to treat visitors to the 2010 in a similar vein.

It is good to hear from people who have played and experienced the resort, good or bad......

To be fair to the staff though they do try hard and do fairly well considering the numbers playing at the resort.

That's an interesting reply, and in fairness couldn't fault the staff at the 2010, and indeed couldn't fault any of the courses condition, which were all on a scale of excellent upwards. It's just a shame that they "might" be taking their eye off the ball a little in the resort itself. All four couples felt the same, and there were similar comments heard from others. You've got me jealous for you having a home course like that though, would love to be in that position but a 400 mile round trip is a bit much! One of the guys I went with is due to be a marshall at the Ryder Cup ,he managed to sink his 9 iron for an eagle on the 18th at the "God know how many yards 18th" I dread to think how many punters he's gonna bore with that next year!

And so he should and even more so when anyone dunks it in the water at 18 in any of the matches.....lol

I do think that as the venue for the Ryder cup, the resort hotel, the Monty and Roman road courses have become very marketable and the resort has capitalised on this as any business would....downsides of this are large visitor numbers and most probably a dilution of the personal service that people had experienced on previous visits....

If you do decide to play again I would stay in the Manor house for a more personal touch and get out on the course early to avoid the horrendous course delays.

Yep,we've stayed at the Manor House both times. As for getting out for golf early, that unlikely based on the time we were getting in!
