I fancy taking up walking as a pastime, combining it with my love of photography. I live less than an hour from the Peak District. I've got most of the clothing I need (today I'm off out to buy a big orange survival bag). I also love cycling, but I think walking is another good way to see the countryside, and keep myself nice and fit.

I have a mate who also likes walking, and when walking alone I plan to text him my route. This week I did 5 miles up to Chew Reservoir, here:

I have an OS map, and GPS, and a compass. I just wondered if anyone else walked over the hills/moors, and if they had any tips? I weigh about 17.5 stone and am 5'11", but much of that weight (honest!) is muscle mass, I reckon I'm about 2 stone overweight.

Make sure you know how to use the map and compass. Apart from that, I find walking (and running) one of the best ways to get to know any area - just explore. There are some lovely walks in the Peak District, but watch out for the Edges wink

Kit-wise, I tend to assume the weather will turn rubbish at some point and carry enough gear to be able to have a cold, uncomfortable night waiting for rescue if things do go very wrong. For me, that means a survival bag and wet weather gear and some emergency rations. Usually I don't need to use it and so far have never had an unplanned night on the fells. I've only had to call Mountain Rescue once when someone else collapsed and they were with us within about 30 mins - very impressive.

Thanks. I did 9 miles on Sunday, took me 5 hours. fking brilliant.

I have most things, map, phone, compass, food, bag, medkit, windup flashing torch, and I also texted a mate where I was going, and texted him when I was safely back.

I couldn't find the emergency bag in Decathlon. Is it this kind of thing?

The view was stupendous, although my legs were wrecked later that evening! Even though I'm a mature cyclist, I found muscles I didn't know existed biggrin

I can't look at eBay from work but any Blacks or Millets should have survival bags - big plastic (usually orange) bags that you can completely get into. One bit of advice: don't unfold them unless you absolutely have to as you'll never get them folded up as small again!

Glad you had fun at the weekend. Unfortunately the muscles you develop cycling aren't the same as you develop walking and running (or at least the developments are different) but the cardio improvements are transferable.

Stunning! Mind if I nick it for some desktop wallpaper?!

Beginning to think I should pay a bit more attention to my surroundings when out on my bike...

Parrot - that is a stunning pic.

I took up running properly two years ago after years of cycling and surfing as well as long walks most days - found the fitness really helped and soon notched up some good race results.

We have lovely scenery around here (S Cornwall) but that really is splendid.

Won't a Defender do it? Or the choice of a driving god?
