i've just decided to take up golf. i've been going the driving range for a couple of months now with my fathers golf clubs. however i'd like to get myself some golf clubs but haven't a clue what to get. i'm thinking of just getting a set of irons for now and i have a budget of £200 and don't mind new or 2nd hand.

i am a beginner and i can hit a ball but my consistency is the challenge so ideally i need a club with good forgiveness

i had a nosey around some of the local golf shops and i seen a nice set of 2nd hand calloway big bertha irons are these any good? any other recommendations?

I took up golf three years ago. Got given an M2 Package set of Ben Sayers clubs.

Cheap'n'cheerful. Do the job...but aren't flimsy or crap.

Check out the packages in www.thesportshq.com This is where I got my set from, and I think the total paokage was under £140, including delivery.

Maybe not the best set in the world, but then again, I am not the best golfer in the world either.

I use Wilson Di7 irons and I think they're great. Wilson have updated them lately and the new model is the Di9. Very easy to hit, big sweetspot, great distance and a very high trajectory.

They're a little over your budget if you buy new but you should be able to pick up the Di7s second hand pretty cheaply.

Cheers

Basically you should be looking for anything with a cavity-back and a large sweet-spot to get you going.

I'd recommend going into a few shops and asking to try out whatever they've got in your budget, including any second-hand clubs if they've got them as you're likely to get a better club for your money, just make sure they haven't been fitted for someone a foot taller or shoter than you otherwise you'll be adding a handicap you really could do without!

I started with a set of Mizuno MX-17s which you could probably pick up for that money now but be sure to browse a well known auction site too, you might just pick up a full set in a bag for that money.

To start with the clubs aren't going to make a massive difference and once you start to improve I can absolutely guarantee that you'll be wanting to upgrade to something a bit more special, so don't waste too much time and get playing!

As some of the others have said. Go try some. But do it somewhere with a decent range.

At the start there is little point in spending huge amounts. Your style of play will evolve. Once evolved you will find certain clubs will suit you others won't.

I could never get on with calloway or ping irons despite them being very popular. I felt wrong with large headed irons. I ended up with Cleveland irons & Calloway woods.

The best thing you could do is go to a driving range with a shop and have a hit of a few sets. Whatever you do don't spend a fortune at this stage. A colleague of mine has spent thousands had them specially altered to suit him and he is rubbish!.

An oversized set will give you better accuracy with less distance and to be fair if you can hit it straight it doesn't really matter on the distance that can come later, keep out of the rough and your half way there for a beginner.

Ive played on and off for 15 years and have never spent a great deal on clubs.

Get them fitted properly - lie angle, grip size, shaft flex etc - you wouldn't start ghooting with a bent gun barrel...

yes

In Golf "Straight" is far more useful than "Long" to a high handicapper like me. Unfortunately mastering "Straight" is also quite an art.

Honestly. Tuition is where you should put your money - not a shiny new driver.

Have a look at used pings (i3 but not blade ones) will keep their finish better than the rest. Callaway X14 or x16 (non pro series) would be the next best bet.

Buy second hand all the way - far better value.

Good luck & stick at it smile
