Heads up - the new series of the ultimate fighter will be shown in the UK on Saturday nights at 11pm on Five USA, starting this Saturday (19th).

It will be interesting to see how Kimbo gets on and how Rampage and Evans get on as coaches since they seem to absolutely hate each other. Could be a good series.

I'll be watching, theres some ridiculously big guys on it this season, it'll be interesting to see if they actually have any skils. I'll be rooting for the ex NFL guys to get beaten down badly.

The heavyweights bore me, too slow and too much ground work. Poor striking usually.

UFC's becoming it's own sport, it's not MMA anymore.

Why the downer on the NFL competitors?

I used to play American Football (British League only though) and there were some tough guys including ex. boxers, martial artists etc. there. At least most(?) will be good athletes. Even the biggest players have to be able to do some pretty impressive physical tests to even get near a decent team. The more athleticism we can see in the heavyweights the better and maybe some do have some background or existing interest in fighting sports rather than just trying to jump on a bandwagon when their careers in the NFL falter. Is that the reason you are suspicious of them?

I'm holding out no particular hopes either way but maybe some will end up being a pleasant surprise, haven't seen any trailers yet so have no idea what they look like for now though. At least it might be a bit intriguing to see how people from different backgrounds compare?

Traditional heavyweights are too slow, very little groundgame and often fantastic striking.

These guys are part of the new breed of heavyweight who cut weight to get to 265lb, they are all proven athletes such as guys like Brock Lesanr, Carwin etc

Not guys like the previous heavweight like Jardine and Rashid that then immediatly cut to 205.

This should be very entertaining.

As you said its because these NFL guys are just in MMA as their NFL careers have faltered. I have no doubt they'll be explosive, strong and powerful but like Lesnar, without proper mma skills that can make for a bloody dull fight, with their primary attack being to dry hump their smaller opponent and then pummel them with stupid looking hammer fists.

There already been a 300lb ex NFL player in MMA for years now, Bobb "supplements" Sapp and he sucks.

I agree that the ex NFL players so far haven't always done themselves justice - Brad Irons comes to mind - but not all have been too shabby. A couple of ex running backs and a wide receiver proved handy from what I recall.

Bob Sapp did seem to have potential for a time, albeit in a one dimensional way, but from everything I've read on him a combination of injuries, lack of time/focus/prep for fights did for him. Several pundits have blamed this on the promoters rushing to exploit his sudden popularity and his not being able to cope with or fit in all the appearances (plus a penchant for certain extra curricualr benefits!)

It would (will - ever?) be good to see a really athletic super heavy with enough background in one or more MMA skill sets and with good trainers to fight in a varied, exciting way.

Ill support the 300lb freaks if it means we get a 225lb cruiserweight division for Fedor, mirko etc to fight in. That said I really want to see Mirko LHK Lesnars head off.

Yeah, i know what i'm talking about.

I like a good mix of stand up and ground work, something that is rare in high-level MMA recently IMHO.

I'll check it out, maybe i could be wrong...

First episode was quite good, Rampage Jackson being funny as usual. One of the funniest bits was when he was making reference to one of the fighters "big ole titties".
Kimbo looks quite relaxed and isn't giving it berti big bks which i think could get him over with quite alot of his haters, alot of people were expecting him to go in with a real mean attitude but he seems quite mellow and i honestly think he is really keen to learn. There is no doubting Kimbo has great striking ability and having just that may get him the odd win but he will always get caught out eventually if he doesn't improve his ground game, and his conditioning.
Should be a good series.

Better?

Rampages choice was.... strange, and the fight was pretty poor. Rampage himself acts like a clown, but you can't help but warm to him!

rampage is as dumb as a box of rocks but he's pretty funny at times. Rashads team will walk this season, he's brought along Greg Jackson to help coach his team so thats pretty much game over, especially considering half of rashads picks are his team mates already anyway.

Rampage has "You aint got ado a damn thing" Kimbo though hehe

My pick for the series is Demico Rogers, I've heard he is a beast

p.s. that Abe guy has the worst takedown defense I have ever seen in my life. How he thought he had any chance in MMA is a complete mystery.

I'm with 130R here - terrible defense (no scramble or spin, or even sprawl), but when he was on his back, he did nothing. At all!

No attempt to fight out from his back, or to even work something with his <ahem> (B?)JJ. No hammer fists, no moving with the punch, not pushing with feet on hips.... the list goes on.

Oh well, one down... (Did the victor look totally gassed by the end of it?).

As for the others.... I respect the fact Kimbo has got in there, and let's see what happens. Mr NFL #1 draft pick needs to find some cardio.... now! Rampage talks more sense with his fists than his mouth. There are some people in there that will quickly sort the wheat from the chaff. And there we go!
