bbc said:
Chelsea have been banned from signing any new players until January 2011.

The punishment was meted out by Fifa after the club was found guilty of inducing French winger Gael Kakuta to break his contract with Lens in 2007.

"Chelsea are banned from registering any new players for the two next registration periods," said Fifa.

Chelsea insist they will "mount the strongest appeal possible" and say the sanctions are "totally disproportionate to the alleged offence".

A statement from the Premier League club, who will make their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas), added: "We cannot comment further until we receive the full written rationale for this extraordinarily arbitrary decision."

Fifa's dispute resolution chamber (DRC) ruled Kakuta, now 18, must also pay compensation of 780,000 euros (£682,000), for which Chelsea are "jointly and severally liable".

It would seem FIFA / UEFA is not a fan of English football. Arsenal hit with a diving charge and now Chelsea with transfer ban! WTF!

Not a fan of Chelsea but their getting picked on something that a lot of other clubs are also guilty of. But I suppose they want to make
an example of bigger clubs - funny how they don't pick AC Milan, Barcalona, Real or Man Utd scratchchin

^very true

i'm sure manchester united could've been charged in a similar way when the whole obi mikel saga happened and so could've chelsea.

and right now man city would be up there too alongside real madrid

I'm sure the ban should be over turned after appeal. It's very harsh. They are not the only team that have done this. Real Madrid have done much worse over the years. Even Manchester United and the majority of other teams haven't played fully by the book. I am a Manchester United fan by the way.

what about hughes and the lescott saga? One rule for one and one for another, although i'm confident it will be overturned on appeal

As a QPR fan I find it hilarious.

No point in hitting them with a fine, they have deep pockets. So it's either got to be a points deduction, or a ban like this.

They'll appeal, and the sentance will be reduced, it always is. They've more than likely set it at 2011 because they know it will be reduced and this way even with a less harsh sentance it will still be a punishment.

A Swiss club has apparantly had a similar penalty for the same thing.

Thing is, other clubs do it, but how many "victim clubs" report it to FIFA and complain about it until something is done?

Should have sent them to league 2 to be honest, a much better punishment to fit the crime.

It's not an anti-English thing. Roma got exactly the same penalty after they poached Phillipe Mexes from Auxerre in 2004.

The ban got reduced to one transfer window after appeal and the same thing will probably happen here.

they'll throw the best lawyers at them

and most cases that go to the tribunal go in the favour of the appealing party
