All this drug-testing m'larky strikes me as missing a trick... surely we should at least try an alternative form of athletics where the athletes are permitted any and all performance enhancing chemicals. We could even have a "constructor's championship" to see which forms of these products are best. World class athletics is all about pushing the human body to extremes, seems a bit silly to artificially limit that.

Imagine if we could get someone to do the 100 meters in 7 seconds!

it opens up a whole moral issue as to whether it is right to encourage people to dope themselves up to oblivion just for entertainment purposes.

But so many of their other practices are harmful long term too...

There was a comedian who said about having a drugged league, seeing someone running a 5 second 100m is entertainment!

However I think more of a drug handicap league.

Such as Phelps likes a bit of a smoke of some green. So he gets time knocked off.

Dwain Chambers has time added on due to performance enhancing drugs.

Which practices are you thinking of?

On the original point, it depends if you think athletics should be about being the best you can be or the best you and your chemists can be. Taking it further, wouldn't it just become about who has the most money? The best drugs would be expensive to develop so only the richer nations would be able to afford a program of doping up lots of people to find the few that excelled.
