Sorry if this is a repost.

It's been announced today that Michael Owen will be given the number 7 shirt at Man United. Is Alex Ferguson losing the plot?
George Best, Bryan Robson, Cantona, Beckham, Ronaldo and now Owen.
I'm a NUFC fan, I don't have anything against Owen, he played st for us but that's by the by. Is he really good enough to don the legendary number or is this a big mistake by Fergie?

It was announced a couple of days ago.

Not best pleased as a Man Utd fan but I'm willing to give him a chance to see if it fits him.

Is he good enough to wear no 7?

Oh yeah, the best striker England have arguably had and he isnt good enough for any shirt he wants?

Me thinks Ill go with SAF once again pulling a rabbit out of the hat.

assuming he can stay injury free he'll score a shedload of goals so I dont see why not. Man Utd are usually pretty good with injury prone players, van nistelroy had a dodgy knee yet we never heard anything about it when he was at Man Utd.

Owen will be Man Utd's top scorer easily next season, 30 goals easily I reckon. Hes a better player than rooney ever will be and wont get himself sent off or go in a strop when things arent going his way.

30 goals in 65 starts and 14 games from the bench. Given the standard of the team that's not a bad return...

Owen, played correctly, will score shed-loads.

Then again, what does Fergie know...

He played st for you because you were all st. You played way to deep for a stiker like Owen. Thats because you couldnt retain possession or keep the opposition out of your half. Owen had little chance of scoring.

You didnt get relegated because of Owen.

I can't see any thing in his post where he states we got relegated because of Owen? confused

And he did play st for us, he didn't give a fk about Newcastle.

IMO there is not a snigle Man U player that is better for the num 7 shirt than Owen...

Owen scored almost 1 goal in 2 starts for newcastle. That's with a st team who are st at attacking.

In a good team who are good at getting forwards Owen will excell. I predict (as long as he doesnt miss many games) at least 20 goals this season for him

2 goals in 2 games in pre season...so far so good for Owen

I'd be very happy if I was a Man U fan

I wish Owen hadn't wasted the last 4 days at Newcastle or England may have been more sucessful!

He'll be the top scorer in the Premiership this session and will score shed loads. Owen isnt a creator, he's a finisher - give him chances and he will score. He is going to get a lot of chances!

Fergie knows exactly what he's doing and from Owen's point of view he needs to get into the England squad, both sides have a point to prove - Fergie that he hasnt lost it and Owen that he can still play. Genius move by Fergie and its hardly cost a thing!

As for number 7, its a number albeit loaded from a Utd perspective. Its a question probably best answered at the end of the session, but I'm pretty sure Owen won't disappoint!

Who else would you give it to?

The remainder of the squad are probably perfectly happy with their current numbers, and wouldn't want to change - additionally, it probably wouldn't be a good thing to 'promote' any of the current squad to No. 7.

Next season we'll have the same issue with No. 11 - who will be 'big' enough to take that one on, of the current squad?

I heard a rumour that the No.11 shirt will be retired when the legend himself does. Would be a fitting tribute to him.
