So, the standard fare in the past when training has been the usual protein shakes, plus creatine for a few weeks before holiday. Does anyone reccomend a brand or particular product that has good results?

I am coming back from a long injury (2 years) so need to put size on (lost 2.5 stone) and obviously lean muscle. I will be doing weights, Muay Thai and general cardio/flexibiltiy/stamina work.

I use SCI-MX Whey Protein, and its good and seems to have the best taste, its reasonably priced too. However, I want to put some good weight on too, so when this runs out, im thinking Maxi muscle Cyclone all in one next. The maxi muscle didnt have as good taste, but its good protein ad im easily suckered in by the 'better results' claim... lol I generally pick Vanilla or Strawberry

Cyclone was what was recomended to me actually. Is it pricey do you know?

I have a mate who also now only gets his protein from shakes. He has sushi occaisionaly but otherwise it's shakes all the way as he says that guarantee's that it is the right protein.

Hmmm, not sure about getting all your protein from shakes!! Have always been told/have read you should get as much protein as you can from food and use shakes as a supplement, shakes are perfect first thing and pre/post workout but I wouldnt think getting ALL your protein from shakes is advisable.

used to know a guy who got his male friends to donate protein supplements, apparently it is very good for you if you can get used to the taste smile

Yeah 3..sometimes 4, I normally have whey at the times I mentioned, then have a milk protein based one right before bed (slower digesting than whey so it lasts longer during the night, well thats the theory).

I dare say you could just have shakes, just goes against what ive read tis all. Would imagine getting as much as you can from meat, nuts, eggs etc as part of a good diet and using the shakes to whack up your protein intake would be a much healthier approach.

No no not yet, ive seen some recipe on there for them, but i aint gone that extreme, i did order some samples of other stuff today. As this was recommended to myself as a first time user, what does it compare like to other products?

Im fairly new to this, only been at it a year, but got recommended them by my friend whos been doing it for a long time now and is as price conscious as he is health conscious. He started out using the branded items like Maximuscle, etc but now just uses myprotein, ive yet to see any comparitive tests...but to a certain degree id imagine whey protein is whey protein, with or without the brand (this is just my opinion smile, nothing against the brands just cant afford the mark up!)

I'd be very interested to hear if anyone knows about any comparison data as I would tend to agree with you, athough I have heard it argued that the posh ones have all sorts of other stuff that help. I'll have a look at myprotein.com smile

Yeah I know what you mean, my mate has just bought a 1.2kg tub of the maximuscle diet variety whey which was special offer £100 for 3, normally £39.99 and it has extras like CLA, green tea extract in and other stuff I cant remember in it. Thing is you can get 2.5kg of whey for about £22 from myprotein then any extras that you want seperate and still end up a lot cheaper.

Like I say just my opinion, either way you'll be getting some good protein so all good on that front, just gotta decide how much of a workout your gonna give your wallet wink

(btw think there is a largish thread regarding protein shakes in the 'health matters' section somewhere)

I've used Reflex stuff for the last couple of years to good effect, Instant Mass as an extra supplement, and Instant Whey pre/post training. Tastes good too.

What other supplements are people taking, vitamins, creatine etc? I'd be very interested to hear what people take with good effects and would reccomend.

Any good websites for this type of training etc that you use/reccomend?

WRT to Cyclone - I've been using it for a while now and would certainly recommend it. I've gone from around 11.5-12st to 13+st in the last few months. It can be expensive but if you're keen (like me!) you can buy in bulk and get it for around £27 each, although this does mean buying 10... www.monstersupplements.com is where you need.

As to how effective it is... well I'm eating well, not really drinking, training fairly hard and using a PT at the gym so it's hard to tell exactly where the major benefits are coming from. But put it this way, I won't be giving up in the Cyclone just yet.

What i am after is a laymans term guide to the various supplements supplmenting ther diet to assist my training.

What do i need to take take and at when? Is a whey protein shake in the morning, another at snack time before a workout and an all in one shake afer a good way to do it? Whitch brands should they be?
What about Creatine, glucamine, vitamins and all the other stuff I dont know about. What brands or specifics should I be looking for on the packets and how do they help me.

I need reasonable explanations and reasons as to why I would take this, what effect would it have. Im sure a lot of you haves used this stuff and had esults and I'd love to hear them.

Someone please break it down to a begginer who needs help

+1 - I tend to use Reflex Natural Whey (you get used to the non-taste after a while). I also found their equivalent of Cyclone to be very good - results and price wise.
