I've got my first lesson booked in for 10am on Saturday (something about making sure the tide is right and I don't get drowned dead)...
Do any of you lot do it?
I've fancied it for years but never did anything about it, expecting the sport to need a load of travel around the country.
As it turns out, there is a decent beach just down the road from me
I haven't been this excited since they made that film about midgets in our work car park

Did a couple of half days a year or so ago in Kuta, was a good laugh and managed to get up pretty quickly. Definitely quite a buzz when you do get up on a wave
Been meaning to do it again but never quite get around to it...
Honestly, it's all I've been thinking about all week!Been meaning to do it again but never quite get around to it...

You might find it if you search health and safety - dangers of the workplace for vertically challenged people.

I started out as a "sponger" (bodyboard, but a proper one, search Manta wingnut)when i was a fearless kid, nothing like a 12ft swell when you've forgotten your fins and you happen to be on holiday in Teneriffe!
I started "stand up" 3 years ago, got into it fairly easily as i used to skate a long board for years and its all to do with balance, same rules effectively.
To start out with i found getting up the easy part, it was manovering the board which was the hard part, then with time and practice it all came together.
Just be carefull, there are a number of things that can see you in trouble, if your at a surf hotspot and you drop in on a seasoned surfer they are more likely to punch you than put it down to you being a beginner, so be aware of etiquette when out in the water.
If you come off, be aware that if your board flies out with enough force it can easily knock you or a fellow surfer out.
Never ride the white water, everyone will point and laugh.
Be aware that when you go under you maybe under for along time, my brother blacked out once after coming off then as he resurfaced the lip of the wave behind the one he was on hit him on the hed pushing him back under and pinning him to the sand before rolling him ragged, he was extremely lucky.
cant really offer any more advice other than practice and more practice, dont go out in too big surf too soon as if you do have a bad off, it'll knock your confidence and that can mess you up.
Oh and dont ever think seals are cute, they are extremely aggro if you get anywhere near them in the water.

Well I won't be out in 5' waves on my first lesson! I hope...

it does get pretty heated out there, i've witnessed some propper punch ups
2-3' is perfect to start out on, what size board are you starting on?
Id imagine he'll be starting on one of those yellow and blue Swell soft learner boards.2-3' is perfect to start out on, what size board are you starting on?
I too started as a sponger, used to surf at Gwenvor beach next to Sennen Cove, takes me back some years though, used to get some massive swells down there.
I still sponge now and then, still got my trusty Manta blade fins that are about 10yrs old, but I mainly stand up surf now, Ive got a 7ft 6 mini mal as I cant ride a short board to save my life!
Have fun OP, you'll be hanging ten before you know it!
There has been a massive influx of beginners to surfing over the past few years. A dawnie at my local break five years ago, there would probably have been about five in. Nowadays it’s more like 50, mostly people who cant catch a wave, don’t know the rules and dare I say it, don’t give enough respect to the locals. This is what causes the aggro. Surfing is one of the most secretive, introverted sports you can find, it will ruin your life. Your constantly looking at weather charts and wave buoy readings, your always thinking of getting in. I’m even self employed so that I can fit work around surfing. For me Longboarding is the only way to go.

Ironcially, when I was learning the waves were so enormous we had to.There was a bloke who had hired a board and was trying to ride 6'- 8' + waves, my instructor was taking great pleasure in laughing at him, although also pointed out that's how people kill themselves.
Well I turned up and introduced myself, only to be told the lesson was cancelled
I asked why and the bloke said, 'look out there'... I was like 'Yep, that's the sea... Oh!'
Seriously, it was dead calm... a slight swell of the water about 10 yards out, and then it broke literally as it reached shore. Bummer.
Went out on a kayak for a bit but got board (geddit?) and so the group went and got a load of foamy boards to practice paddling and popping up.
I came in three hours later with third degree sunburn and a massive grin. Jesus it was frustrating, but now I can pop up and stay up for a few seconds. Some of the guys that had been before reckoned it was easier to keep your balance when there are waves.
Anyway. I'm sitting here typing wishing I'd have stayed down there and gone back in! There's always next week
Does anyone know how you can find out about the waves before leaving home?
