I'm a fatty... lets get that clear at the start. 5'10" and 16 stone. Can almost run 3 miles stopping only to cross the road occasionally. Time has settled at about 32 mins. I intend to push this down now i'm getting into it.

However - running bores me to death, so thinking of taking up a sport. I played a bit of schoolboy rugby 10 years ago and am thinking of getting back into that because i'm crap at football.

How would a local team take to someone with dubious fitness coming along to training??? Do they cater for novices?

You'll be amazed at how many people at clubs have 'dubious' fitness!!! wink

Most club's will welcome you as social rugby is still the backbone of the game. Get along and get stuck in. In the first instance concentrate on match fitness, if you are a bit iffy 5 minutes of a match will be shocking, even at the low levels the game moves pretty fast and being fit is one thing but being able to tackle and be tackled and keep going is another. So I would turn up at training and see how you go, it'll be fine. Also if you havent played for a bit concentrate on learning technique etc again.

You will love it, I have played just about very season for the past 35 years, from the age of 5 til now, I still love it although I have been the through the being pretty good phase to now being slow and crap!

Great fun!

Hi. Most clubs will be only too happy to take someone who can run 3 miles without stopping & has played before, so has a grasp of the rudiments of the game. Two suggestions; don't under-estimate how much more tiring the sprint/stop nature of rugby is than street running &, if you play in the forwards, please, please, please extensively train before playing competitively; seen too many spinal injuries out of vets dusting off their boots and trundling out because they were handy players 10 years ago frown((

WO WO WO lets get one thing straight 5'10 and 16 stone isn't fat wink (says the 5'11 16stone ex backrower)

As has been said before many clubs will welcome you with open arms, as outside the first team a lot of lower level clubs struggle for numbers. Now is a good time to get involved, get your self down and get a good preseason under your belt. As Twit said if you fancy playing in the front row, get some time in on the scrummage machine, get your technique sorted. That would also go with tackling, the amount of players at all levels of the game that get their head on the wrong side, body position all wrong is scandalous, big hits look and feel good, but they don't half take their toll especially if you technique is poor.

Finally, i lost a good friend in his 30's at my previous club due to a heart attack. Foxy felt ill all morning, played the game and died in the changing room in front of his team mates in the third team, as we were finishing our game. So please consider having a good medical before contemplating playing. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/tyne/6140868.st...

fat? I'm 5'9 and 17.5 stone hehe and I played wing at National 1 biggrin

Whereabouts do you live? If you let us know we can suggest a team with a social side.

My local side is Stourbridge and they have about 3 "recreational" teams, then a regional league side, then a 2nd XV and a 1st XV

My old club (Moseley FC) have 2 recreational teams I believe smile

So you'll be surprised at how many clubs are there for you to pick from.

As above though, make sure you get yourself physically fit and perhaps attempt to do 50 pressups and situps for a month prior to taking part in the game to get your overall strength up smile

I get endless grief from the other half for being a fatty at 17.5 stone and 6'5!

So tempted to get back into some rugby but I haven't played regularly since I was 16 and I'm so out of shape. Used to be a second row (oddly enough at my height!) but don't really fancy being right in the middle of the scrum these days so I'd be playing out of position too.

Can anyone recommend a team in south wales - cardiff/newport area that doesn't take it too seriously?

Just a quick google and this team popped up. Wooten Bassett RFC, www.bassettrfc.com.

Has 3 senior teams, a vets team and looks to have a good social life wink (all important for social rugby).

Good luck, i'm sure you going to enjoy yourself.

Ive literally just started at a rugby club a week ago, played a lot at school and a small while after but then didnt play for all of 15 years!!

Im in reasonable shape and the fitness training is a killer!! Still very enjoyable though, and it's so nice to get hold of a rugby ball again.

Im being cautious, as mentioned it's an easy sport to pick up an injury, but great fun.

The coach and other players have been great, ive got shed loads to learn again and am a hinderance when playing touch to warm up/cool down, but hopefully Ill start getting into it and get better.

Ive found the game has changed so much since I played, I remember the forwards being great lumps who lumbered around the pitch while the little guys (me included) buzzed around the field with the ball. Not anymore, everyone is expected to be quick, play is made at the breakdown and centres are huge! Hookers are now as big as the props and everyone can run and sprint.

Obviously at this lowest of levels it is less of a big deal and more "traditional" rugby is still played, I dont intend to take it to any more of a serious level (and at 37 I dont think Id manage to anyway) so the social and fitness side is the main part, which local clubs seem good for.
