I've always been into sports, and weights particularly in recent years but I now fancy a bit of something new. So, boxing or Muay Thai? How do the training regimes differ? I won't be competing and although i will possibly join a club, I will be staring by adding it to my home training.

Any thoughts or suggestions much appreciated.

What do you want to achieve?

Personally, I find it odd that you could have two useful implements and not use them... plus fingers, elbows, knees, shoulders, head...

Far point. i want to achive a few things. Overall strength and balance. Heavy weights is all well and good but my flexibility etc could be better. Cardio needs work. Striking/self defence is a bonus really.
I guess I thought starting with boxing then moving into Muay Thai, the reasoning being that it would give me a strong base to start MT.
Any useful websites for training for beginers?

Might as well just join a MT gym and get on with it. See if you like it and take it from there.

Boxing and MT are very different when you analyse the punching techniques and leg positions during their execution.

Although, many UK MT instructors aren't all they say they are (there is one guy who trains MT fighters and is really well known in the ringsport world, who I know for a fact is a Karate man by lineage and has never trained MT himself!) so if you do go down that route, make sure they really know what they're talking about.

There are far more "good" boxing gyms out there than MT, so this may have to be a consideration given your location. Where abouts are you OP?

As usual in these threads, it's all about the instructor and what you want to achieve.

Also, bear in mind that you will pick up boxing much faster than MT.

So what exactly do you want to gain from your training OP, and how serious are you about it?

You need to be honest here; if you just want to learn how to brawl, that's cool, but it will affect what I would reccommend to you biggrin

I have never ever understood. I know this for sure 'cause he used to train Karate at my club before opening his own MT centre a few months later.....he wasn't even a black belt....blue in fact biggrin This was a long time ago, 15 years or so; long before the web would out him as a fraud!

Lies bullst and bluster. It's what makes the MA world go round!

Ringsport guys baren't exactly the brains of Britain though.....on the whole.

I guess what I want is to learn some self defence as well as vary up my fitness routines. I had the usual scraps as a youngster but I reckon know I'm older I could do with knowing a bit more about self defence/fighting properly, should the occasion arise. Also, weights are great but I need more plus I fancy the excitement so boxing etc sounded a good place to start. I am serious about the training, I have no plans to compete but never say never right?

Not learning defensive techniques, a la your MT place is crazy non?!

Thanks for the help MAG.

I boxed and now do MT; I loved boxing but I think I prefer MT on the basis that you use the whole of your body. A kick in boxing would just knock you over, no defence taught.
I have an edge over some who've only done MT re punches but not kicks (yet..), most MT'ers can't box with the speed, accuracy & variation of a boxer.

For self defence either is good, I'd lean towards MT though as it covers all the bases. Fitness is similar for both (though i was pushed harder in boxing)

Either way, they're both great, make you fit, strong & more confident.

Op, the answer is simply to go try them both.

You will quickly discover which, if either, you want to drop.

Good luck!

If fitness is your goal, I have heard from a friend who tried both a MT gym and a boxing gym that the routines in the boxing gym were much harder. I have only ever trained at a MT gym (and a wrestling gym) though so I cannot give you first hand knowledge.

If self-defence is your goal tho, I would advise try http://www.tryclosecombat.com/ or find the nearest place that teaches krav maga

Wouldn't say either of them are truly any good for proper self-defence work. Think about it.

How bizarre. I daren't teach until my master suggested I thought about starting my own branch of the school up. I was bowled over.

Still, I read a book about Karate when I was 12. I will start up Pink Flower Candles and Cushions School of Karate. Just need to have a 50 level belt system and I'm quids in. thumbup

Are there training routines/basics etc that I could start on at home? The reason I ask is I have just recently recovered from a shoulder operation and am also about to move house in the next few months so have some free time at home, but cannot join a club just yet.

Keen to crack on too...

Flexibility. Added to general fitness.

I wouldn't start trying to learn proper techniques without an instructor. Bad habits are hard to break.

That makes sense. Cardio and flexibility stuff then? Does anyone else get a sinking feeling when they are told to do cardio?

I hate both stretching and cardio equally.

Any suggestions for the sort of tings I want to do?

Thanks for your time too smile

Have you used this guy? Looks like a scam to me, but would be happy to hear otherwise.
