Looks like the worst possible outcome for us Swans fans:

http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11095_53634...

Tough because it's hard to call him disloyal as he played for Wigan for 6 years, but he was all talk about a '5-10 year' plan for the Swans last year.

I reckon he will take a few of our best players too.

Who will replace him? Steve Coppell? Chris Coleman? God forbid!

There are a lot of Wigan fans here excited by the prospect. He was a fan favourite at Wigan as part of the three amigos and is good friends with Dave Whelan.

I read rumours, when Man Utd were looking for a new assistant, that Roberto Martinez's name had been banded about, so he is obviously held in high esteem by Fergie.

And by Benitez - hence why we have been able to loan the likes of Paul Anderson, Febian Brandy etc. Martinez has a fantastic future as a manager - I just hope it is with us for a bit longer. cry

Let's face it, in all probability he's gone IMO he's lost all his integrity. I don't think we'll get a seasoned Manager, in Huw Jenkins we trust.

That is football for you mate. Money talks - I imagine he must be what, tripling his pay going to Wigan?

I would be more pissed off if it was some random club, however I can understand it a little with Wigan.

Also, let's put this into perspective. However good we all think Martinez is, he is only proven at Championship level. Yes, we had a good first season but it is a big step up to the lion's den that is the EPL.

If I were him I would try and consolidate my reputation by attempting to get Swansea into the EPL in the next 2 years.

Very well said. I hope for Wigans sake that he is more David Moyes than Paul Ince.

The thing is though he always gave the impression that he's not interested in the money, led us to believe that he only wanted the EPL with Swansea and that he was the man who was going to get us there. His four year plan. His behaviour is hypocritical, especially when you consider the comments he made after Robinson and Trundle's departure. Didn't he say that he loved the club etc., that he would never leave and would have to be kicked out. I bet he says the same thing when he gets to Wigan. At least we don't have to see those stupid Brown shoes again.

Agreed, and sadly I think we were naive. A lot of people say they are not interested in the money, but when that contract is sitting on the table that says £30k a week I defy anybody to not have a second-thought!

I think Swansea have a fantastic manager in Martinez, and seen the Swansea pre him and with him, and the difference is fantastic. You cant blame him for wanting to go, or at least being tempted. But I know one thing, if he wants to manage a team where quality football is played, id go to Wigan over Celtic, Scotish football is a joke of the highest calibre...

There was never any possibility of him going to Celtic over Wigan because despite entertaining 60,000 every second saturday in glasgow opposed to 15,000 in wigan you have the richest league in the world against one where even the insignifant tv money isn't getting paid at the moment.
Money, money, money.

Money, money, money.
Nothing to do with the level of competition outside of Old Firm games and a few CL matches, along with the fact that he played for Wigan for 6 years and thus has some affinity. Plus a friendship (on some level) with Dave Whelan.

I wouldn't even say that Wigan have any more money to throw at the situation than Celtic. Celtic's owners are considerably richer than Mr Whelan, they just choose not to spend it!

Sadly you are right, Scottish football is dead, the Old firm can only afford the supposed cream from other scottish clubs -most of them end up going back as they cannot perform for the cup final they have to play EVERY weekend, not to mention european games.
Being big on loyalty i'm pleased Martinez is going to a club he has an affinity with (until the big boys come calling atleast) Mr Mowbray played for Celtic and understands what it means to represent what is/was one of the worlds great clubs (amazingly i can remember Wigan being elected in the football league)
Cletic, as i understand it have shareholders, not owners, and whether they pay large sums into the pot is up to them. We don't have an Abramovich to sell us on buts thats another interesting debate

Martinez spent as much time at Swansea as he did with Wigan. He came to Swansea after a number of unsuccessfull free transfer moves, Wigan themselves having initially disposed of him on a free transfer. In addition to a number of now hollow quotes proclaiming his undying affinity for the Swans, the one that galls the most is that he would 'have to be kicked out of the club' that he 'loved' so much. Last week he was probably the most hated man in Swansea, especially as he had in the past vilified a number of fan favourites who had moved on to better things (one at the end of his contract and the other for £1m), stating that they should have remained firm to the Swansea cause. He'll shaft Wigan when something bigger comes along. Loyal is something he is most definitely not.

He has, with out doubt, put the Swans on the map though. I just hope he does not strip them off all that growth e.g. backroom staff, top players etc.

ETA - god forbid if we went down this year, I would never, ever forgive him.

He's going to take Jones, Reeves and potentially 6 players which he has stated are EPL quality. At least nothing is expected of us this season, just consolidation.
