Anyone else in a casual or pub side? Where do you play?

Got my first game today, first sporting activity in over a decade of drinking, smoking and eating so I'm sure it'll kill me!

I joined a team called "Surbiton Imperials" what attracted me was their assertion that they were a "weak-medium" team (perfect for me and my abilities!) Pre-season piss up (sorry meal) last night so a little worse for wear this morning. Good banter though and lovely weather today so I am looking forward to the day and season!

I need to find a similar team. I think I'd enjoy it.

I used to play club cricket, (and even had county trials as a lad) but I haven't picked up a bat in anger for 15 years.

I tended to lose interest when it all got serious, -I just can't muster the same competitiveness for cricket as I do for 5-a-side etc. I truly believe that cricket is for watching, unless you're on the beach or your game has strong connections with the brewing industry.

I'd love to play sunday cricket, but I can't find a club team around here that isn't made up of 19 year old asians who are very competitive, fit and talented, which I'm not.

Anyone know of somewhere in Slough Maidenhead who are looking for occasional players?

My club ( in Oz ) is sponsored by the local pub, we get $500AUD per side and have put it back through the till by the end of the first game ( we are a very sociable club ).

Age 60 and have played mens since I was 14, was very sharp some time ago and was still opening the bowling at 52 in 1sts, now play in our 3rd side and swing the ball both ways.

I love the game and all it has given me over the years, I coach boys through to 1sts, sit on the lectures and examinations panel for the umpires association and will probably die with my whites on but not for a while yet I hope.

Early season training and the first game hurts like hell as does the first game after christmas but you do get over it and the first beer back in the sponsors establishment after a days play tastes so good.

Should add, we play Saturdays with only one or two Sundays per season.

Hello mate - I'm living in the same area and am looking for the same sorta thing!!

Do you know of anywhere with a set of nets? I would be more than happy to have a go bowling at you (and visa versa) if we could??

PM me if you fancy.

Cheers

Our team is based in Oxford and this is out 12th season. We're only a pub team who play Sunday friendlies, but have noticed a decline in the number of similar teams over the past 10 years. Most of our games these days are 35/40 over matches against local village sides. Our pre-match preparation and post match fines committee are still held in the pub.

First game was yesterday (lost!) and after 40 over of keeping wicket I can hardly walk this morning!

Just seen this message sounds like a good idea! I'll look out for nets/club to see if it['s worth following up locally.

Erm...as expected to be honest! But it was an excellent day and I loved it. Aim for next week is to get a run, and maybe a wicket!

Start 12 over evening matches this week - Right arm off spin, bat 6/7.

Can't be bothered to play at the weekend, I am trying to get a single figure golf handicap this year and can't write off a whole day...

Bad form to bump ones own post I know, but I'm feeling inordinately pleased with myself having scored 66 runs yesterday! bounce

I've never scored more than 12 before so I'm well happy!

Now, what's the best way to treat pulled muscles?!? hehe

Thigh and "Hamstring"

I'm just covering it with deep-heat and trying to stretch them out which seems to be easing it up a bit. I'm just so unfit!

Speak to your sponsor, ours has been known to ply the injured with any amount of amber medicinal fluids to ease post match discomfort.

Good stuff mate! Mostly steered through the covers along the ground for four or all cow corner ... ?

I'm guessing if you've never scored more than 12 you were in 'the tail' and so either took advantage of the other team's ageing bowler who has been playing for about 40 years and no-one has the heart to drop him cos he's crap or some 12yo who came along with his dad to make the numbers up? hehe

Only jokin' . Well played ...

hehe A fair point, but our captain had a brain out moment (Clearly he didn't remember the last game) and put me in at number 4! I was sure we were in for a kicking as I came in at 2 for 3!

This "play yourself in" lark clearly has some merit!
