Nemanja Vidic - who is favourite to lift the trophy - Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand, Edwin van der Sar and last year's winner Cristiano Ronaldo are all in the running, along with Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.
Is Vidic really the favourite? He had a good start to the season, but his form has been very poor since Nando tore him a new ahole. I'm also surprised to see Fattie not nominated.

Giggs and Ferdinand are the only players on that list who should be named.

Its ridiculous that players for lesser teams are not considered. I know i support Everton but surely players like Lescott, Jagielka and Cahill deserve mention. How about Shay Given who has been amazing this season?

Stupid list

Well maybe you should ask the players trade union, as they are the ones who get to vote. Don't know who they are, but it is current members.

Another problem is that the votes are counted in February with the most important matches being played in April and May... This means players who are injured for the start of the season have barely a chance to prove their worth.

It does seem daft to be awarding it before the end of the season. Surely it is logical to give the player of the year, to the player of the whole playing year.

How the fk can a player who has only started 12 games be player of the year?? He is at best a bit part player now, an utterly rediculous result!! There were far better candidates than him!

Gerrard has been superb again, Lescott and Jagielka for the Blues have been solid, Vidic (with the exception of the Liverpool game) has had a great season, Van der Saar kept God knows how many clean sheets in a row, plus there must be many other players in the so called lesser teams who haven't had the coverage that have had a far greater impact then Giggs!!

This has rendered this award totally meaningless!

I feel that this award has probably been awarded based on Giggs' performance for the past x years, rather than this season, because he probably won't have another chance to win it again as he's not getting any younger, and the players want to honour him in this way before he starts his swansong.

I agree though, I think there have been better players based solely on this seasons performances (which the PFA award should be based on).

Should have been Shay Given - his save at Goodison on Sat was an example of what he has been doing all season long.

Clearly a sympathy vote. It's more like a 'Lifetime Achievement' award than a player of the year.

I think Giggsy has had a great season even though not starting that many. He is still making a great impact. And i can't see how people can now slate the award just because you do not aggree with the decision. People that have been playing with and against Giggs have voted for him not the public.

But the only people who have a say in it are players. So that is kind of irrelevant.

If they are going to do it how they have, then maybe there should be a young player of the year, player of the year and outstanding contribution. Which is really the award Giggs won yesterday.
