Hi.. my eldest has had a "lazy eye" since birth... basically what this means is the optical nerve doesnt transmit the image to the brain properly so his vision in one eye is about 10-15% of a normal eye. It doesn't cause him too many problems as he has always had it and the body just adapts. He wears glasses with a light subscription (there is no point giving a really heavy prescription for his bad eye as it is not the lense that is at fault.

He is now trying a contact lense for his good eye (yes just the one) for sports.

Our concern is obviously damage to his good eye during sports. Whilst this is a remote possibilty it is a concern as there is no fall back position and if he knackered his good eye he would be all but blind.

I am trying to look into sports protection glasses/goggles for him.

Cricket and racket sports are fairly easy to resolve.

I have had a search on the internet for footabll and Rugby but the glasses/goggles i have found are quite bulky... anyone got any idea where i can find the type of sports goggles Edgar Davids wore when he was playing football?

Rugby may be a no no... its difficult as a parent as I don't want to stop him doing sports.. but I feel i must provide the best protection available.. Once he is able to make his own educated decisions then he can then take whatever risks he feels like. Currently there is no operation / procedure than can cure the position although if stem cell research gets going then it may be an easy fix in the future.. until then any advice will be greatly appreciated... He doesn't have any difficulty seeing things or any problems with it as it is all he has ever known... does suffer from reduced peripheral vision on the left hand side though so does get caught with a few hard tackles in rugby from that side..

thanks

Paul
