Can anyone tell which rule Brad Freidal broke for a penalty to be given and him sent off?

can't think of 1 matey, but torres like a lot of other players from abroad in the premier league have a very good knack of diving.
the ref got it totally wrong in that case if you ask me.

er, dive....ok then.

anyway, i beleive that there is a rule that if the keeper or a defender brings down the opposing player whilst he is the last man then it is an instant red card.

anyway, i must go, i need to go wipe the coffee from my screen and keyboard after the dive comment.

My point is basically another total refereeing balls up
He (the ref) had a great view, Freidal advances and gets down to save a shot.
Torres overhits his touch and ends up buldering into the keeper -I don't think he dived and Friedal certainly didn't contribute to him ending up on his backside.
How the ref construed it even as a foul I just haven't a clue

He didn't get the ball?

It really is that simple?

It shouldn't have been a red car, anyone will admit that.

You can't come rushing out, not get the ball, take the player out and then complain!

What was he playing at turning away from Torres? Perhaps he thought it would make it look like it wasn't a foul? if he'd of actually stretched his arms out, he might have been able to get the ball

Both were going for the ball, Torres got there first and Friedel's momentum bought him down.
A foul in the box which means a penalty.
Friedel was moving, if he'd been still you can say Torres 'blundered' into him. Whether torres overhit it or not makes no difference - he got there first.

I agree with the penalty but think the defender would have stopped Torres having a cleear shot, which means the sending off was wrong.

the crux of this is that Friedal was stationary and turning away because Torres was charging into him. If you're standing your ground then it must be the responsibility of the opponent to avoid you and whether you get the ball or not is irrelevent. This was not the classic case of the keeper diving at th feet of a striker and taking him out. But it was in front of the kop at anfield, I'm just glad the game didn,t hinge on it

In the letter of the law it was a penalty, of that there can be little doubt. The only question is whether Friedal denied a coal scoring-opportunity and, if so, whether he was the 'last man'. The referee was of the opinion that the answer to the last two questions was yes so he had no other recourse but to send him off. The rule of no discretion was brought in after claims of inconsistency in refereeing in such situations.

It's the fact that torres came strolling out of the box grinning like a cheshire cat (smug bd) that made me think he was chuffed to get a penalty, it just smacks of trying to get a penalty to me.
