What's your opinion of it?

Great English tradition or anachronistic irrelevant spectacle full of toffs?

Personally I love it. Sir Steve said it was like Karting is to F1, but wherever I am in the country I will try and find a pub in which to watch. I suppose I'm slightly biased though as I've rowed the HOTRR a few times.

Never really had an opinion on it. Doesn't seem too important an event to me and not sure why it should be?

It is good if you live within a few hundred metres from start line, so you can watch the start and run back to watch the rest of the race on TV.

I like it, I rowed for my station at RAF Brampton, even though I was a bit rubbish I can appreciate how hard these guys have trained and how much effort they're putting in!

Oh and they're always bloody gorgeous fit young men! cloud9

Not interested in the slightest. Don't they fiddle the University entry requirements so they can better crews?

Until I rowed, I thought the Boat race was a bit irrelevant. But having done a couple of Head Of The River races then I have huge respect for the guys who take part.

The boat race goes upstream, against the tide and it is 20 odd minutes flat out (I used to train doing 24 mins at 32 rating on ergos for the Head races and that would nearly kill me). I have huge respect to anyone good enough to row in that race. To do all the training and then come second (last) must be agony.

Sure- these guys might not be the very best in the world, or even the country (not far off it though), And it shoudl be more inclusive, like having a knockout competition run with the boat race as the final. But I think as a sporting occasion I'm glad we still have the boat race. It's a little bit of Great Britain that we would be worse off without.

I appreciate the hard work that the teams must put in to it but as a spectator sport it doesn't cut it for me. Live and let live though.

Just about the last highly competitive, non professional competition left in the world, without any form of corporate sponsorship, all spectating is free to watch and open for all.

There's no raping, spit roasting, snorting, eye gauging, flobbing, fan riots, WAGs, slags, brown envelopes, bling, Astons etc, etc. Although, I appreciate that this may be a bad thing wink

Whether you like rowing or not, it is an exceptional event in a sporting world which has gone horribly wrong in the last 20 years. It is competitive sport for the sake of competitive sport and the principle.

You missed moonies - some chap exposed his backside from one of the boats near the start line last year.

It does proceed up river but it is rowed with the rising tide .

I love it.

I have no idea why though. I've only participated in a couple of 'pubs & societies' rowing races, but I don't think that's anything to do with it.

When is it?

Won't have to this year - they're are putting screens up in Bishops Park so the hordes there can follow the race.

Mooning, like streaking, is not just socially acceptable but legal pre-requisites for a proper British sporting event. biggrin

Someone else mentioned sponsorship, I was refering to the individuals not having to promote some brand, rather than the whole event per se.
